820 vs 2.7k cathode resistor on V1A

Post by Steveo »

I have 220k plate on V1A of my 2204 type circuit. I was wondering how different a 2.7k cathode resistor sounds or feels different from say an 820. My amp has a 910 in there at the moment. Just curious what other have experienced.

Thanks

with 100k plate resistors, the bass differs clearly between the two. the 820r has more bass and seems vital to the brown sound of EVH. Still, I like the 2k7 with hotter pickups, and the 820 with weaker pickups

Ok thanks, the calculator did show more bass. I might have to mess around with it some.

What value is the cathode resistor bypass cap? if Ck is 330u, 820Ω vs 2k7 Rk won't matter. If it's 0.68u then there will be a noticeable reduction in bass with the larger resistor.

It is bypassed with a .68uf capacitor. I do plan to tinker some but do you think the 820 vs 2.7k on the first stage makes much difference? Or do you think it matters more on later stages?

Yes it does make a difference, on all stages. As Roe said you hear it clearly in the bass.

I do like the sound of it now and decided just to keep the 910ohm resistor in it as is. Thanks
