In the UK at least, black was historically the colour coding for neutral, with red live. Flexible cables change to blue and brown in the 70s, then ‘twin and earth’ installation cable (Romex in the USA?) followed suit in the early 2000s.
Hence it seems topsy turvey to us to use black for live.
And it’s very common for older USA amps still with their original power cable to have the plug wired with black to neutral, white to live. Which then buggers up the fuse / switch polarity inside the amp’s chassis.

Got the amp running today. Noticed that one of the EL84s was running a bit hot. The label on it was sizzling. But only one of the tubes.
What could lead to one being too hot?

Tubes are supposed to be hot. If there is a paper label on the glass, you should remove it and clean off the residue. if you turn the room lights off, can you see any red glow on the metal plate inside the tube? If so, then it's too hot. What happens if you swap the positions of the output tubes? Does running hot go with the tube or stay with the socket?
