ODS #004 For Sale

Post by Aaron »

Just noticed that Maverick has ODS #004 for sale with 4x12 cabinet.

Was wondering what the starve switch does? From the limited info around, is #001 the only other amp that has the starve switch as well.

Cheers,
Aaron

A little background on 004..Owned at one time by Charlie Bonet.

Built sometime in early 1974

004 is a rare 1st generation ODS

4 was later upgraded in 79 to a classic specs by Alexander

Different OD entrance network than 2nd gen

#004 looks 100% original and only touched by Alexander and does sound great, with still a lot of Fender and some SSS like cleans to die for..

Aaron,

Maverick sold #004 a while ago. Only the speaker cabinet is for sale.

Speaking of #4, here is a schematic of the amp after the update by HAD.
I have never played or seen the amp, but everybody who tried it said it
sounded fantastic. Have fun with this

Looks very similar to the David Lindly amp.

I have also heard rumours that one of David Lindley´s amps was modded
in a similar way. BTW here is the rest of the schematic

Interesting to finally see how the "Starve" switch is implemented. Thanks Marcos!

It appears to intentionally tip the driver off balance (quite a bit, I would think), to make the amp break up sooner, from the looks of it. I think the resistor in series with the grid is to minimize the pop of the switch. The 1-M to ground will cause the driver to "tip over" in terms of DC and AC balance. Cute. I was expecting to see Carvin's trick of simply dropping the driver B+ by 100 volts....

Ok, consider my cage rattled.......
Marcos comes through again!
This is actually the amp I was wanting when I built my #40 clone, but was unable to find enough reliable info to put together a layout I had any confidence in.
If I remember correctly, I think the topology of these early amps was quite different from the later 2nd generation amps. (please correct me if I'm wrong on this!). More Fender style with the power supply caps underneath in the doghouse and the FET circuit on the main board. (?)

Hey Everyone!!

Keep in mind all the EQ caps and the V1b LNFB cap and some others in 004 are not orange drops. Most of the caps look and have the colour like the dark brown caps (perhaps CDE's) that you find on the board of the attached #003 winterland pic...These have very distinctive tone as well as produce a silky-ness that gives it that SSS velvet glove effect..I would imagine these caps are rather large part of this amps appeal!! These dark brown caps, you find in a lot of the very early '68 to '75 Dumble amps and are now a bitch to find NOS..

AFAIK all the EQ caps in #004 - the middle cap and LNFB V1b, too!! - are of this dark brown colour and look 100% original. So the only parts in this amp that are perhaps or even probably not in this amp from its very beginning in 1974 are the treble, middle and bass pots.

I hope this helps!!

Tony, you are DA MAN!
And I mean that in the good way. (Not that "da man been keepin' me down" way).

If these schems are accurate, this is indeed one interesting beast.
The PI values are very different from 2nd generation. Maybe 12AX7?
And how 'bout that 8.2K feedback resistor.
