Re: Dumble suede Tolex
In a recent OT shootout on Magnetic Components site I thought the MM output transformer sounded muddy compared to the others.
This was on a Marshall 50w Plexi circuit.
Personally the Mercury Magnetic craze is more of a buzzword than the quality of the transformer.
I sounds good in ebay ads to say it has a MM transformer(s).
Edcor is another great transformer and they are pretty too.
Not sure about their output trannies but their power trannies are good.
The shootout. I realize these are compressed mp3 files but interesting nonetheless.

Edcor OTs
I have an Edcor OT in my current (re)build. It is a massive 70w 20-20kHz 3k5 Zaa I am running from a 5F6A preamp using 6SL7s with a 6SN7 recovery stage after the tonestack into a #124 ODS circuit switched into a 5F6A PI, also 6SL7, feeding a pair of 8417s running 500VDC in UL into the Edcor. The 6SN7 really gives huge headroom in clean mode, with a .001 PI entry cap.
Yes, this is an eccentric design, but it actually sounds pretty good and the Edcor OT has a lot to do with it. The power supply is oversized and uses two GE 5AR4s in parallel so it doesn't sag too much compared with SS rectification.
I am not experiencedwith the ODS circuit but I like what I'm getting so far. I am playing with the controls to optimize it and will probably futz with the ODS circuit if necessary a bit, but so far it is big and clean, a full 100W, loud and proud, with nice distortion in the ODS so long as I don't push the 350K entry trimpot.

Jelle, that is an awesome looking amp! I'm sure it sounds as good as it looks. Do you build the cabs yourself?
Re: Dumble suede Tolex
The heyboer iron sounds great too.
David, thanks! Not trying to spam but you might like these as well:
