Matchless Style build
Wondering about a build idea using some 40Watt Vibrolux style iron
PT is 325-0-325 180ma and OT is 4K
wondering if I can do a Bad Cat Hot Cat style build?
or is 180ma not enough for 2 EL 34's
any comments are appreciated
Thanks
Darin

Re: Matchless Style build
You're more likely to be limited by the filament current EL34's are 1.5A each vs. 0.9 for 6L6's.

Forgot about that
PT has only 4.5A 6.3V...bummer
Thanks Martin

Re: Matchless Style build
You could build the Hot Cat with 6L6s - 2 x 0.9A = 1.8A plus 4 x 0.3A = 1.2A, totalling 3.0A for the heaters. With EL34s you would be at 2 x 1.5A = 3.0A plus 4 x 0.3A = 1.2A, totalling 4.2A and still within the limit for heater current.
Have you ever played a Hot Cat? It has a very specific sound, definitely not the Marshall/Bogner/Soldano thing.
Cheers Stephan

Badcat
If it helps I have a Badcat Hotcat,I traded a couple amps for it.I have not played it a lot but it is a really nice sounding amp.The cleans are ridiculous.
The amount of gain is huge, very focused.I have not opened it up yet but everything looks high guality even the chicken head nobs are heavey plastic.
Mine is the combo 1-12 and its a keeper.Big trannies, ruby tubes.I think you would like the amp.Mikey

Thanks Darkbluemurder
for some reason I was thinking ax7's drew .09 current
I may give it a try...
About a year ago I test drove one at store they had a used 1x12 combo going for 2500.00
sounded really nice different...but too pricey "used" for me (my wife)
Congrats Ampmike
I agree that brand of amp has a "tough as a tank" quality
Thanks

Matchless style build
Going to try a matchless style build using the ceriatone layout
and a schem I found...still not sure about the iron but using "what I have" parts...making sure of layout before drilling chassis... not sure about iron placement
any comments are appreciated
thanks
Darin

Get the TDS iron, i imported a set from the states and i was blown away by the quality of the constructiondcribbs1412 wrote:Wondering about a build idea using some 40Watt Vibrolux style iron

Re: Matchless Style build
Wow.....!
10 Watt screen resistors.....
I still Do Not Know what to think about the rating for screen resistors.
I use 1 watt, and have not had a problem in 3 years. Perhaps 3 is not long enough to see the effect.?
Although.....I have seen them in Fender's for 3 decades.....and they are still working.
Perhaps there is no definitive "argument" concerning screen resistors.....

I may look into this...I guess if your gonna build it do it right ...right?Get the TDS iron, i imported a set from the states and i was blown away by the quality of the construction
Only my chassis may not have the room for TDS iron...do you have any
dimensions of these xformers?
As far as the 10 Watt screen resistors..not sure if it has to do with heat
dissipation are not..
is this on EL34's?I use 1 watt, and have not had a problem in 3 years.

Re: Matchless Style build
I built my chassis from scratch using a slightly different layout to save space, they certainly fit in the ceriatone chassis and i,ll post the dimensions of the cutout outs when i get home next wek, or give TDS a email and they can give you the dimensionsdcribbs1412 wrote:I may look into this...I guess if your gonna build it do it right ...right?Get the TDS iron, i imported a set from the states and i was blown away by the quality of the construction

Re: Matchless Style build
Hi Folks
I dunno 'bout you but to me looking at the schematic, I'd be tempted to say that whoever drew it up got the 1M and 5M1 grid leak resistors on the input the wrong way round.
1M seems kinda low for grid leak bias and using anthing bigger than 1M to set the input impedance seems pointless.
Then again I'm no expert on grid leak biased pre amp tubes.
Cheers
Shane

Hi shane
I found this on another forum and looks like what you are saying
also how does the ceriatone layout look?
Thanks

not really sure how the smaller size choke would do...might be just fine...for this build I'm thinking of using a Hammond 194e 30H 100ma 500 Ohm choke for an AC30
