I agree somewhat. Reminds of that line from the Dirty Dozen - "They're pretty, but can they fight?" I am seldom ever concerned with what it looks like. This thread is kind of why I don't post builds here. I am more concerned with performance than aesthetics. Same reason why I don't get turned on by pretty cabs. They're just waiting to be scratched anyway. Same reason why I like rat bikes.

Oh, no argument here, having been inside many blackface Fenders that looks like the flying spaghetti monster but sound great.

Hmm...interesting points on both sides of the issue. It's just that even an amateur like me sees things that aren't done very well. I'm not talking about an artfully pretty aesthetic. I'm seeing slack lead dress, wires flying and crossing unnecessarily, filament twist not getting done close to the socket, not to mention what others observe. My builds are not artful and sometimes even bad looking. All I'm saying is that when I think I can do better...

It is one thing to see some of what's been mentioned (flying leads, etc.) in old time Fender factory builds. The assemblers were under pressure to produce and didn't have the luxury of time on their side. When you do a one-off for the sake of doing it, you've got nothing but time. That means you can do better.
