2144 Marshall Reverb model

Post by hywelg »

I have been collecting info for a while about this model, with a view to building one (or possibly two, one for modding). I have seen the pre-amp schematic and some photos and I know its based on a 2204 poweramp.

Does anyone have any other info? I came by the model after seeing Aynsley Lister http://www.aynsleylister.co.uk/ use one with both Strat and Les Paul and was amazed at how well it cleaned up with the guitar volume. He runs it with the 'boost' always on.

I also know a little about his, they (he has 3) have been modded in that his first one had a Musicman 6k6 OT fitted which changes the tone and feel quite a lot. Some other mods are present but this is the main one, plus Eminence Governors.

There are so many chassis for Marshall builds out there but none with 4 noval tube socket holes. I got a quote for a custom one but at roughly 5 times the price of an of the shelf 3 holer I baulked and am now trying to find an alternative. Any suggestions? UK based.

Thanks,
Hywel Harris

My approach would be to take on something like the ampmaker steel chassis: http://www.ampmaker.com/store/Punched-c ... d-7x9.html

Then take a step cutter to the holes you need to adjust for octal basess and the can cap.

Not sure how on a stock chassis like that you are supposed to mount the dual can caps without the need for a step cutter anyway.
You can't stop the signal, Mal.

Everything goes somewhere, and I go everywhere

I could do a similar thing with this Ceriatone chassis
http://www.ceriatone.com/productSubPage ... eteAmp.htm

Which would be better suited to a combo.

I am thinking I'd be better off getting a JCM800 chassis and find a space to drill an additional socket hole. Or alternately this has the requisite number of holes but it would put the PI beyond the power tubes, not sure whether it might give me problems with lead dress.

Wallace Amps. Brian has some 4 hole pre section 50w chassis cut.

HURRY

When they are gone it takes months to get another order in.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I live in USA and I use Modulus chassis and faceplates good product and Mike is great to work with.

I use his JCM800 chassis flipped for front facing knob combo cab Mojotone.

Mike made me flipped faceplates to match. He notes it as mirrored image on his site.

It was Modulus that quoted me $170 for a custom small box.

Ey Up Shane!. Yes that would do very well. Room to spare. Only problem is that all my cabs are vertical 2x12's and I think it looks crap with a SLP style head overhanging the cab. Might have to build a new cab as well.

Hi Mate
Ahhh.. yes one thing just leads to another..

You could always use one of his 800 small box ones and punch an extra hole..tight squeeze tho I suspect!

Speak soon mate

I don't see where the problem would be in using this JCM800 chassis for what I think your saying you want 4 preamp tube holes and 50w output 2204, right?

Use a plate on the one octal hole to install 9 pin socket.

I even made a 4 12AX7 2 EL34 AFD #39 high gain into a Ceriatone Express chassis it can be done sir.

Weber has the 6mx $30 chassis I've used that too.

I've been meaning to try this new chassis from CED or Tubesandmore.com

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-HCH01

You can see the product files underneath the price click on that to get size and diagram of chassis, holes specs etc.

I think these guys would be priced nicely too even for one off custom chassis.

Should get some custom Tweedle D chassis/plates made from these guys.

There are some nice chassis out there!

I like Marks suggestion about using the Modulus 800 chassis and adapting one of the octal holes with a plate.
Its a nice compact size and will probably fit on your cabs.
Modulus even do a nice small box size Marshall style head cab for that chassis.

Cheers chaps,

I think the Modulus 2204 chassis is probably the better bet, moving the two octals along one, moving one of the can caps inside and using standup PT to give more space for this.

Suggestions for transformers? Bear in mind the OT should be 6k6 ideally with 8 and 16r taps.

What would be the ideal PT voltages?

And since this is a reverb model and the schem lists the reverb transformer as C2659. With a Hammond 4FB2A1C pan.
