Yeah, flocking. What about it? It's been around since at least the 19th century. It's like powdered velvet that you pour over adhesive. They use it on wall paper, but it isn't in style right now AFAIK.
Well, seems I don't know what's in style. Get some at Target:

You can always leave something on the (outside) top of your kitchen cabinets for about 10 years, it will develop an interesting flocking :)

Act fast, limited quantities.

Looks like garbage.

It was a real hot fad in 1972 for about two weeks - They used to flock cars and hot rods with it. Ugh. Ever try to sand that shit off a International Scout? It's murder.

FWIW Hughes and Kettner used it extensively on their Guitar and Bass Combos.

Problem is that they applied it so well that ebverybody thinks it's carpet.

Traynor also used it on some of their PA equipment.

EDIT: H&K Attax40 & 100

Looks like carpet but see there's absolutely not cuts or joints, specially on corners or the back panel.

It's impressive how protector less corners survive the road.

It's not the same as "suede" but closer to plush.

It could probably be made to be durable by spraying some lacquer or poly over it. Maybe that's what H&K did.

We used to flock our Christmas trees.

And, you must have a color wheel to complete the look.

That speaker is front mounted ;)

Just remove the front metal grill and replace it.

No need to pull the (glued) back panel at all. :)

To do flocking right, you have to have a good electro-static setup. You need to get the fibers standing on end while applying.

It ain't easy to do it right or cheap. And I couldn't imagine ever looking good on anything but a puppet. Used to have to flock things for stop-motion animation projects...but it was far easier to just send it off to Hensen Creature Shop and get it done right.
