Lawsuit era Ibanez LPs

Post by xtian »

Driving daughter #2 to look at college later this week. I have a chance to look at a '73 Ibanez Les Paul, very much like this one on eBay, but for less $$:

Anyone have experience with one of the bolt-on neck Ibanez guitars? Worth a look-see?

I owned two Ibanez bolt-ons, but they were made in the 80's. But, I gotta say, as far as necks go, they were both extrememly comfortabe in my hand - very thin front to back, which I like a lot.

Seriously though - great guitars - I'd go for it.

I have played a couple, both had really nice necks and played well. Other than being bolt on they had the same quality level of the set necks.
They don't command the value of a set neck though.

I bought a used one in '75.....my first electric
Sold it in '76 to help fund my first "pro" guitar, a '76 Gibson LP standard

MIne had a fake "carved top" that was actually pressed and formed plywood..... hollow underneath. To this day I still tap on the tops of fake lp's to make sure they have a solid top.

I don't remember much about the guitar, but it served me well in the year I owned it. Sold it for like $75, which was a good chunk towards the $500 I paid for the LP....new.....with a case! Have you priced a new standard lately? Those days are long gone!

No. I think it says he took the kid to college and then, somehow, managed to have a little bit left over to buy a cheap copy of a LP :o
All this, IMO, shows good planning. Congratulations are in order!

Uh, well the thing is, she hasn't started college yet, so I'm not poor. Yet.

Anyway, the trip was mostly pretty awesome. My daughter AND her two friends all got accepted into the freshman class while we were there! Early applications, you know. Smart kids.

I did buy the guitar, but wasn't thorough in my evaluation, and ended up getting a copy of a copy. It looks very similar to model 2350 in the 1973 Ibanez catalog...except it has a plywood body instead of mahogany. It needs frets leveled, new nut and new bridge. But feels and plays pretty nice. Could be a sweet number with some work. The vintage Dimarzios sound good.

Seller is being cool, offered my money back. Countered by asking for $100 off. (Only paid $250...another sure sign that he knew what he was selling...and I was being stupid for not knowing what the guitar actually was...)
