NOS Haltron 5751
I just bought myself a Haltron 5751 from a Radio Rally for £10, bargain! However I'd like to know the actual manufacturer of the valve if possible as Haltron just rebranded valves. As you'll see in the photo attached its got black plates, says 3.C.61 on the valve itself and has CV4017 written on the box (might not mean much though as it was written there by the owner). There are also some dots below the 5751 but I'm not sure what they mean. The guy I bought it off believed it is a military valve and that it was most likely made by Western Electric.
Any ideas?

GE. The pattern dots are a giveaway.

GE. Are their valves good or bad? I havent tried this one yet.
Re: NOS Haltron 5751
Taste is in the ear of the beholder. I have one or two of these. I don't remember what amps I put them in. I like them well enough but I'm not that picky. £10 is about $15. I recognize everything seems to cost more on your side of the pond. From what I see, eBay value for a used 5751 (old stock, who ever can tell if they are "NOS"?) is about $10 plus shipping. So, I think you paid a fair price for it. I wouldn't have any regrets about buying it.

Yeah I would guess GE as well.
They are my favorite preamp tubes.
Black plate or black long plate tubes usually date from the early 50's or so.
Most all tube manufacturers switched to short plates in the late 50's to early 60's, probably to help cure microphonics in the tube.
My personal favorite is the General Electric, grey, short plate 12AX7.

Interesting. Admittedly I only realised a 5751 had less gain than a 12AX7 after I bought it. However it could come in handy for a Fender build in future.
Re: NOS Haltron 5751
In some builds the 5751 can be a better choice than 12AX7. It's a little bit tamer and a nice option.

Re: NOS Haltron 5751
I tried the 5751 last night, immediately I noticed there was a lack of highs and a lot of bass. The lower gain was noticeable but not extreme. Decided that the valve isnt suitable for a Trainwreck. Maybe I'll use it for a Fender build one day.

Re: NOS Haltron 5751
Could be a treat in a bass amp. Also, many Fender tweeds were built with 12AY7 spec'd for the preamp; a 5751 would be a good sub. So many are run with 12AX7, no problem for those who like the extra gain, but AY's and 5751 can sound terrific in tweeds.Littlewyan wrote:I tried the 5751 last night, immediately I noticed there was a lack of highs and a lot of bass. I do hope to build a Fender Bassman one day! Either a pre 64 Blonde or the same one the JTM45 copied.
