Liverpool speakers?
Hello all,
I have a Ceriatone Liverpool loaded with Toneslut trannies that Allyn tweaked for me awhile back. It sounds pretty good to me, but it's quite bright. So much so, that I keep the Treble and Presence set on Zero. I'm currently playing it through an open back 212 loaded with a G12H30 and a G12-65. Those speakers have tamed the brightness a bit, but I'd still like to knock it down a bit more.
Scumback Speakers is offering a pretty good sale at the moment, so I was thinking of picking up a new pair of his speakers. Would you all be able to offer any recommendations? BTW, they don't have to be Scumbacks. I have a pair of his Scumnicos in my Bluesbreaker, and they sound great, and he gets good reviews across the board, so I was thinking more Scumbacks may be the way to go.
Thanks,
Brad

How do the Scumnico speakers compare to Celestion Blues?
I have a Blue and a H30 in my 18 watter.
The closed back cab is generally the way to go. It veils the highs and offers better bass response. I tried two Celestion 65's in an open back which was okay though the 4X12" is the way to go.
There are a few videos on You Tube too.

Re: Liverpool speakers?
No myth!
If your Liverpool requires the treble and presence to both be off I'd try some darker speakers for sure. G12H Celestions tend to be quite bright, and the older vintage G12Ms were actually darker. Maybe try a Scumback M75 or Celestion Creamback G12M. Don't forget thick grill cloth too.
I don't always use the long guitar cord trick, but my entire CD was recorded with this 40' cable>

Re: Liverpool speakers?
The Scumnicos sound cool, but they're a totally different animal than the Blues. To my ears, Blues sound sweet and creamy, while the Scumnicos are more aggressive, with sort of a "honk" to them. Very close to EC on the Bluesbreakers album.

Re: Liverpool speakers?
Thanks for the advice, gents. I have one of those cheap Marshall 8412 closed-back cabinets lying around that I haven't used in years. I have purchased some new speakers for it online, but they haven't arrived yet. I got a pair of 65-watt Scumback M55s, which are supposed to sound a little darker than Greenies. I also picked up a pair of 65-watt Scumback M75s with Paper (nomex) voice coils. I think those should fit the bill. I'm going to use the Marshall until I find an Ampeg V4 cab. From what I've read, those are killer with Wrecks. I'll let you know how it goes. But in the meantime, if any of you have a V4 you wanna unload, please let me know!
Thanks,
Brad

Re: Liverpool speakers?
If you really want to tame a bright amp get a fame medusa. I have one in my hall cab and it really is awesome.
Re: Liverpool speakers?
Quick update...I did a few tweaks today. First off, I swapped preamp tubes. Following Ultrasound Studios' lead, I installed a Mullard 12AX7 in V1 and an Amperex Bugle Boy in V2. I used my old standby for the phase inverter...a balanced Sovtek 12AX7LPS.
I also got the Scumbacks loaded into the 412. I haven't listened to that cabinet in several years. It came loaded with Celestion G12L speakers. I didn't even plug into those today. I just popped in the Scummies and buttoned her up.
I probably should have changed one thing at a time, but I'm far too impatient. What I can tell you is that I'm much happier with the tone now. I think the tubes affected the EQ a bit. I'm dialing the Treble between 9 and 12 o'clock. The amp still goes apeshit if I turn the Presence up over 9 o'clock. So far, my favorite setting is Gain around 2, Treble around 10, Mid & Bass cranked, Presence off, then controlling the sound via the guitar's volume knob.
The amp definitely has a thump now. I don't know if it's the speakers, or the closed back, but this baby has been transformed today.

Re: Liverpool speakers?
Good to hear the amp is going in the desired direction. Thanks for the tip on the Scumnico's. Do they sound like these silver speakers?

Re: Liverpool speakers?
Hi Mark,
The Scumnicos don't really sound like the Silvers you linked to...not to me anyway. Those sounded more like current Celestion Blues to me versus Scumnicos.
I'll try to record a clip or two between Celestion Blues and the Scumnicos. I know Scumback markets the Scumnicos as Vox Silver clones, and they might be. But to my ears, they don't sound like those clips you posted.

Re: Liverpool speakers?
Brad, if you could post a clip of the Scumnicos versus the Celestion Blues that would be great.
The link I posted is a little weird in that comparing the speakers at 1:06 (Blues) and 1:48 (Silver) they sound quite different, the Silvers have less highs and more mids. Yet if you hear the speakers at the end they sound almost identical, which is weird.
