I've read that, don't really get how they can be different and the same. 418s must have been nixed a long long time ago. I have a few I got like 20 years ago but haven't seen anywhere since. Are they actually still around somewhere? Still beign made? Are the 225s still being made? Watch they nix everything but the 715/716 no one likes.
Re: I saw this on the Z Wreck
Not sure the value of the links, the pdf spec sheet is available for the 6PS too http://www.cde.com/resources/catalogs/PSP.pdf and apparently if anyone has it's old stock. The 6PS were suppose to end some years ago then they reappeared at CE Dist, a lot lumpier looking, made by SBE or something. Beats me, you'd think if there was clarity anywhere it would be in electronic supply. I should stock up but orders are always 2-3x more money than I expect them to be and something always has to go, it's always the back stock.
Re: I saw this on the Z Wreck
Well, the only way to find out if they are still being made is to ask the manufacturer directly.
The data sheets are still up.

Re: I saw this on the Z Wreck
I seem to recall the 418's are still available from the manufacturer but one would have to purchase a pretty big order to get them.
Torres Engineering has them, but I wouldn't buy a plectrum off the guy. I once tried to buy $50 worth of 418 caps from him and he never delivered.

You guys. The way it works is very simple. CDE posts a current catalog on their site - if it's not listed on the MAIN category page of FILM CAPACITORS:
http://www.cde.com/capacitors/film (once here, go to 'dipped polyester') ....then they are not being made.
Things are changing in capacitor land at CDE.

Re: I saw this on the Z Wreck
Jelle, when you say that the 418 is the same as the 6PS I would disagree. They are polyester, yes. I have a supply of the NOS Mallory branded ODs and I don't think they are the same thing either. Of course I understand the idea of wishing it were true, that all polyester caps that are dipped in orange epoxy are going to sound the same. The manufacturer does not give a rat's ass about boutique amp builders or TONE.
BTW, check Mouser. Find a 6PS - or a 418 for that matter, although this is a glitch on Mouser's part, they will rectify this I think.
In fact, what I see is capacitor manufacturers switching to polypropylene - and all the sellers are falling in line, and right behind them the amp builders. This is like the tube selling business, right? The great glass goes away and everyone starts selling the new glass. Before long no one is even questioning the new tubes. Oh well.

Power/Output Transformers
Hi, would any one know where to purchase either of these transformers for the Zwreck? Or equivalents?

Just to add to the alchemy I read, more than once, that the squashed caps don't sound as good as the ones left round. Supposedly they are pressed after they are rolled? I even heard that before there was an internet, maybe because of those cheap Japanese chicklets you'd see in the low budget New Jersey amps. I sure as heck don't have the patience to a/b among all the metalized polyesters, easier to just stick small pf caps across plates or to ground to fix tone issues

Thanks Mark...Soupdogg wrote:Hi, would any one know where to purchase either of these transformers for the Zwreck? Or equivalents?
I have a photo of the first Z-Wreck prototype and it has Mercury Mag Transformers in it... I'm kinda thinking I might be able to read the part numbers if I work at it. If I have things correct, they are using Heyboers these days... or is that just me confusing the Komet story with the Dr. Z story?
I built my own version somewhat inspired by the Z-Wreck using a Pacific OT and an Edcor PT. It has become one of my all time favorites, although it does sound distinctly different than my Rocket. http://diyguitaramps.prophpbb.com/topic18.html
