124 Re-visited

Post by Bob S »

Finally got back to my reverse layout 124. 4 x 6L6GC.
I know a couple of us have built this reverse layout.
The pre-amp board looks like a pin cushion now...
Voltages pretty much on the money with the values in the sticky.
Chassis & transformers from RJ - Thanks RJ - both great.
Relay boards & 5vdc psu from Colossal - highly recommend them - Thanks Dave. PAB & OD on the floor.
It's being broken in by the new owner - back next weekend for tidy up & a couple of tweeks. Pretty much nailed what he's looking for. Hairs on the back of his neck stood up when he first plugged in. Always a good sign.
Sounds huge & full. It'll get a 1 x12 cab (again from Colossal) with an Eminence Patriot Commonwealth. Huge, heavy buggers but I likes them.
No clips yet unfortunately.

Looks great Bob. What have you got going on for the bias test jacks? There must be a ground lug back there, but I can't make it out. The Encore transformers are Twin spec? And, what's the story on the potted choke?

Good eyes Martin.
I just use the chassis as the ground point to set bias.
The Edcors are huge, got the spec sheets here somewhere. We spanked this amp for 2 hours solid & there was very little temperature rise.
The choke I re-purposed. I forget what it came out of. Around 4H I seem to remember. I'll check the DCR - don't remember right now. It didn't break a sweat either - I was a wondering if it would be up to it, but it's fine.

Did rj or anyone else come up with a layout for this reversed chassis?

I think there was a mirror image layout which got confusing in a hurry.
Once you figure out which end of the pots to ground it's pretty straight forward. But, as with most D style layouts, there's a build sequence that makes it easier - ish.

Very nice Bob! Always good when a build can make the hair on the back of the neck do weird stuff.

You mean to tell me there is a procedure for these?

I usually keep building until there is nothing left to forget. Then I pug it in and find out what I forgot...

Yup - sounds familiar.
My cavalier "fire now, aim later" method caused me to pull the board 3 times.
Finally checked everything twice before firing up.
Only to find I'd screwed up a relay contact n/o-n/c.
edit.
Here's the original thread Mark.

And a pic of her in her house. 1x12 cab will be here today. Will make for a nice gig rig.

Looks very nice. Great housing!
I still cant hone this skill enough for my liking, but with so much inspiration coming from here, at least I am working at it.
