Series connected pairs run well on 12.6V.

Yup, I don't bother with twisting for the preamp anymore, just run short straight parallel wires from socket to socket.
I do DC elevate and that is what makes the biggest difference IMHO with just 2 resistors and a cap.
I build highish gain amps and you can barely tell they're on with how quiet they are.
On the other hand I have this PRS MT15 head that hums audibly even with the volume on 0... And that uses DC heaters
