Deer SUCK

Post by Andy Le Blanc »

Hit a deer tonight, wasn't going fast enough to kill it, but it total'd my work van.
Dumb critter, didn't give me time to react, put us in the crapper, runs off like
nothing happened. Its dead in the bushes somewhere and I didn't even get
a taste.

All I can say Andy, is lucky for you it wasn't a moose. They usually kill the car and most of the occupants. I saw the aftermath of a high speed hit on a cow by a four door sedan. Three occupants dead. Cow very dead. I prefer rabbits and toads.

I hit a couple of years ago and almost hit another one last week.

The first one I hit, I had just passed a transport truck on a rainy day on my way to work. (I was actually running late that day) As soon as I passed the truck I hit the mofo. II could see the truck's lights on my rear view mirror as my car started skidding/wobbling side to side) I thought if the deer didn't get me, the truck will for sure.

BTW I drive a little Civic.

Glad you're fine.

Some years back a friend of hit a moose in a small car. It crushed the
roof of the car. About 4-5 hours later after someone noticed there was a
car in the ditch, EMS found him in decent shape with his hands pinned between
the roof and top of the steering wheel.

My van just turned 200000 and was paid for years ago, its the payments on something that'll hurt.
Can't fix a car thats designed to crumple like beer can when it hits anything bigger than skunk.

Inneffective for Moose and Buffalo but...They just stand there like sacred cows...

Another good option is to install a Deer Wistle on the front of your car or van...works great!

mmmmm, beer... (best Homer Simpson impression I can do)

I grew up in western NY State. Anytime you were out driving at night you had to keep a sharp eye out for those eyeball reflections. I've had a couple of minor collisions with deer, but we both survived. Seems like everyone old enough to drive had had a run-in with one at some point. My wife had a deer run into the side of her car and knock the mirror off. She was nearly stopped at a stop sign at the time. We also had a deer jump through a glass door at our school. The staff had fun getting it out of the school. They do wacky things, especially around hunting season. No moose in those parts, though.

I've seen deer whistles before, the next car will have something.
Maybe a 100 watt'er on an inverter in the back with those nappy piezo horns.
And a CD player with Celin Dion, Barbra Striesand. The top end of that will repel anything.

FWIW, deer whistles don't work - at least not for deer.

Deer hear in the same audio spectrum as humans.

Deer whistles aren't loud enough. I'd rather the little critters FEEL me coming. Low noises are generally more dangerous. (at least animals think so)

I've hit many deer but only two wreck my cars. We lost a biker last week to a deer. I had one deer jump in front of my bike and the deers hind legs hit my head light. Lucky.

It was night and I said to my wife look at those crazy hitch hikers up ahead, well those weren't hitch hikers. I knew when I heard the klomping of those hooves hitting the pavement and saw the moose we were side ways when it all ended. My brother driving behind me was wonder what the hell I had been drinking, he did not see the mooses. Pleural.

Saw some moose track out on the skido trail yesterday, I was walking to the
store with my kid. The local elementary used to have moose drills in case
one would wander though during recess.

As our wild turkey population has increased, so have the fowl-auto interactions.
They're usually not lethal, but can wreak havoc with a windshield and scare the driver into a more serious accident.
Plenty of deer here, also, to add to the excitement of the driving experience :D

I was out on the test range recently, and as we turned from one dirt range road to another, a nice, fat wild turkey hen strutted calmly across our path. I was driving my rental, so I stopped and let her cross. The range guy says, "Damn, Rich, if I was driving my truck, I'd bumper-lunch that bitch!"

Never heard the term "bumper lunch" before, but I guess it's cheaper than a shotgun shell.....
