My #102 Review

Post by talbany »

Since this was a community contribution

Resistors by Jelle and Tmerc/Chassis by Windham, OPT by Eric and cabinet by Taylor.. Thanks everyone who contributed..

Prologue
I pretty much stuck with the standard fare on this one although I did start with 50uf on the plates instead of the higher values no LNFB V1.. since I used the larger Bassman 100 NOS on this one I wouldn't have an issue with low end going to soft on me or being a bit sterile..I might raise it later but so far I rather the like the softer feel and the amps ability to run away is there in spades..

Parts used were KOA Speer Metal Films on Plates and cathodes and Phier CF's in signal path and PI..Nich XM series bypass caps and CTS's in Vol/Master/ trimmer/ Treble/Bass.. AB's in the drive and Level and Alpha's in between..

Iron
Fender Twin Showman PT and NOS Bassman 100 ( 4 ohm sec) and Twin choke..
Gave me 458 on plates.. 200v V1 208 v2 and 290/301 PI
Tubes
NOS 7581A matched drawing approx -48ma bias current
Amperex Longplate on V1/V2 and JJ Ecc803S in the PI spot..

No need for a FET!!

Conclusions
With the amp hooked up to the D-lator set on standard Non HRM/Robben settings the clean channel stays clean at fairly loud volumes (7581's) the mids pop nicely ala Skyliner and the amp likes to hang onto the notes..The feel is softer not real sterile and with the 65's is pretty well balanced..
With the PAB enguaged the preamp begins it's break as you lean into a note typical PAB fare..
OD
The OD is definately the cool part.. :D First thing I notice is the amps ability to run away, take certian notes wrap harmonics around themselves bloom swril and takeoff into feedback with little effort.. The other thing is the amp is very smooth as I would contribute most of this to the resistors used...So if smooth and creamy is your thing I recommend them.. :D
The OD tone stays pretty well focused on up to fairly loud volumes.. In the studio with the PAB bumped the amp feeds back on virtually any note on any guitar.. Personally in the studio the PAB's volume jump is a bit much so we will need to see how it does in a live situation..The mid boost on the front panel is usable at low volumes but at higher values let's in too much low end and I lose some string definition so at gig type volumes I leave it off..The downside is the amp OD tone at lower volumes gets rather thin ( mid boost switch helps) It isn't until you get it up to gig volumes that all the beautiful things start to happen..
I rather like the 2.2uf cap in the presence as this helps sweeten the output section a bit although the presence control does not really kick in until about 12:00, I did however lower it to a 3K3 NFB resistor to help..
Conclusions
The amps ability to feedback on itself is the most noticeable..For U Jazz players who like a smoother OD tone the amp performed well although I am not certian how much of this is due to the resistor and Pot types used..For those rock players out there I would recommend something like a 183 type..
Here is a quick shot of the amp..I am still working on my studio in the new place and will update the post with clips eventually thought I would at least do a quick review to start..I will try to answer any questions you have..

Thanks for reading..

Tony sweet.... I'm glad they worked out for ya as you know I'm sold on them. Concerning your CTS pots in the Vol & Mstr positions, are they NOS 30's or the current 10% offfering?

The trimmer is the only NOS 100k the rest were pulled from old Fenders.. Blackface Pro I believe 68..

Funny how the closer you stick to HAD's parts list the more Dumble like these things act huh!!..You can certainly go mad finding these parts..

BTW.. I did have some NOS PS series caps I used in the PI.. .1 couplers and .02 entrance

Thanks again for the NOS

You're preaching to the choir on that one brotha. I've started redoing my high voltage #102 build. I would like to do all carbon 30% taper pots, but currently I'm shy on the 1M's, but I'm going to keep on searching.

Not a problem, I was glad I could help you.

I went ahead and got new PT and slightly bigger OT iron too. The MusicMan stock replacement from Mojo always ran a too warm for my tastes. So I had a new PT wound that is slightly heavier in the HT, 7.5A on the filaments and a heavier rated 31V bias winding. The OT is a true 100W phat laminated piece which is setup of course for the 700V plate load.

Very cool!!..My MM 230-120 iron runs warm but not hot though bigger iron is always a +...I love the big bottle JJ 6CA7's in mine.. Also try some different NFB resistors..I think mine sounded best at around 7k..I also prefer a 250k drive in the MM..Phat & Wooley..Too each is own huh!..

Good Luck!!

Yep; got a quad big bottle JJ's, 250K drive pot, on fence about switchable LNFB, but I think I'm going to do the traditonal supply verses the 3 node precision supply I did before.

Hi Tony, thanks for the review! Curious to see no LNFB V1 and the lead dress on V1 is slightly different to V2(cathodes) :?

Doc
The wire routing pattern on the board is slightly different on V1.. I suppose if would have planned it better I could have made it identical..I think as long as the Plate/cathode wires are placed next to each other that is what counts..
Personally I like the LNFB when in OD but don't care for it at all in clean so I opt out.. I also do not care for the snubbers if I don't have to go there..
BTW without the Dlator the amp is Bright.. 68pf

All The Best!!

Nice Tony!

You're making me Jones for some NOS resistors now.....

I would like to smooth out my amp a bit, the clean sounds great right now.

Tony, cloning an original Dumble amp seems to bear some likeness to cloning the "Original Sacher-Torte": http://www.sacher.com/en-secret-tart.htm

Yummmmmyyy! :D

Tony,
Man that is a sweet build! Great job, and the trim plus leather corners on the cab give a great appearance .

My 102 is very bright too

What did you use for the prescence cap?

Thanks and great job on the cab as well!!.. Presence configuration is 2.2uf w/390/5k pot 3k3 NFBR on a 4 ohm tap.. The amp begins to really open up at around 3 o clock..

Max
I am a good cook if I do say so and yes there are many parallels to cooking and amp building..Like you say especially cloning!!...Now pass the Cake..

Best Back!!
