18W Liverpool on the cheap

Post by fishy »

I built a 2 holer on the cheap a year or two ago. At the time I quite liked it but more recently I decided to rebuild it. An intermittent fault pushing me that way also.

It uses a Musicalpowersupplies PT and a mojo 6V6 OT I bought 2nd hand. Hammond chassis and a box made of MDF.

Originally it had a cut but now it has a presence. Its a 25k with a resistor across it to lower it and then it is wired like the Express. There is one ground point other than the safety ground.

It has a 39k in there but still gets there.

The clip was done on my laptop with the internal mic.

Fishy I like it and it has some good kick still sounding like a TW for only a two holer. :)

Thanks guys....

It is better than I expected considering the dollars spent. My Liverpool is still head and shoulders above this but it also has much more invested in it; time and money.

It hisses but we all now about that... Tubes are some new Tung Sols, a JJ and 2 Saratovs.

Where does the clean end (if you have any) and the dirt kick in Fishy?

Are the Saratovs EL84 designed for a certain type of early, mid or late compression? I have not ordered any yet not sure why I am waiting either.

The dropping string is not quite TW spec with a 22k on the PI node. This drops the voltages down in the front end a little so there is not so much to play with. I might swap that out when I get some more 10kish resistors. It does not have the chimey cleans I can get with the full build but that has decent trannies and a bright switch which I actually use on my Liverpool. Big difference. This OT is tiny and looks about the size of the choke on my Rocket.
BTW, The clip is with a Greco LPaul with some Burstbuckers (around 8k). The amp was pretty much all at 12.

The Saratovs.... All I know on these is that they are built tough, and can take a beating. They break up better to my ear and they are a little meatier in their presentation than some new stuff.

Wow
I really like the sound of this
I gotta try this now.

cap values?
thanks

The B1 and B2 nodes are small compared to a full build being 66uF and 22uF. All remaining nodes are 22uF. I have a film cap across B1 for noise but I cannot tell the difference either way.
Each node has a seperate ground to the main connection. The buss also connects there too and everything else grounds to that.
Sag resistor is 1.5k / 25W

Output cathode resistor is 150ohm / 220uF
R7/C8 is 39k .005ish to keep the response ballpark.
1k screens

The pot buss is wired Express stlye and the Express presence control is used although I have a 25k win parallel with a 4.7k resistor to simulate the pot I did not have.

The difference in the layout is due to using a main board from a different build.

Thanks so much
I will be giving this a shot asap
or when I feel I'm ready to wrap my mind around it.
I'm thinking
17x8x2 chassis
6.6k OT or do i need 8k or more
18watt 290 0 290 120ma PT
will this get me close?

Thanks for your time

The PT I used is 275 tap @100mADC so what you have there should work fine.

OT is personal choice. I see no reason not to use either 6.6k or 8k and I assume the one I used is in this area since it was for 6v6s.

The box I used is a 16x8x2 Hammond.....cheap but there is nothing wrong with more room.
