best current production 12at7?

Post by Andy Le Blanc »

noodling with a hiwatt cp103 pre and had the misfortune of doing it with a NOS IEC/Mullard that was kicking around the bench.

its wonderful...

12ax7 there's enough out there to choose from and occasionally you can find decent current production

But... 12at7, whats the better sounding current production tube?

that mullard in the phase inverter makes the amp. WOW..

You can still buy Mullard NOS CV4024 for about $25 each.

You can also find RCA 12AT for $25

Also, I have been buying Phillips NTE 12AT7s for $8 each! They are a great sounding tube believe it or not

As far as new production goes, I think the JJ are fine. I have been using them in the PI and as a reverb driver for years with no issues yet. Magic Parts is blowing them out for under $10 apiece.

I'd just stick with the NOS supply. Cheap enough and almost always guaranteed to be better. Many booteek companies use the NOS variety in their amps even though they're using new tubes for everything else. Find a reliable and trustworthy source at the right price and you're set!

JJ's are nice, I haven't had a bad experience with pre tubes yet, some of the EH stuff is pretty good, but jeez those old mullards are wicked...

I run mostly JJ's and sino-chinese in really high gain amps.
