Lots of hoopla about them on the steel forum. It's based on a tweed bassman with octal preamp tubes. I know he uses Hammond iron, but there is not a single gut shot online and he only says he uses "high quality" capacitors.

His numbers don't add up. I can't see 50W coming from 2 cathode biased 6L6s

I am sure Phil is a good amp builder - lots of players have one of his amps. I want to see what's inside though because maybe I need to quadruple my prices

He used to use Hammond iron and Hammond painted steel chassis but I see he has since gone to aluminum chassis.

Is that dual rectifiers in the first photo?

Looks like Jupiter caps in the earlier photos, but maybe Auricap's in the later photos.

I guess you can spend big bucks on audio caps when there are only four in the entire amp.

For that much money he could at least used the Wima's instead of electrolytics.

I love building true point to point, but I still hate looking at it, even if it is my own work.

I think he just copied the 5b6 plan in Tino Zottola's Building Tube Guitar and Bass Amplifiers volume 1.

I built that amp twice and it's a great amp everyone should own one.

I remember your thread. It's on my list. The 5b6 was the one that George Fullerton called "possibly the greatest guitar amp we ever made."

I have a couple NOS 6sl7's, just need to pick up a 6sc7. Didn't you build one with a 6V6 output stage?

Octal pre-amp is definitely on the list.
Seems to me like he's found a niche with high price & low build cost.
Don't know how many he sells.
Sounds like a plan though.
Most of us are lucky to make parts plus minimum wage.

A lot of famous Nashville session steel players (Paul Franklin, Bruce Bouton) play them. Is it the first Tino Z book that has the 5b6? I too have been puzzled about the 50 Watts out of 2 6l6's cathode biased.
