Re: Tele pick-up overwound

The two keys to make a T style neck pickup way improved compared to original is a Nickel cover (Fender used Brass) and a taller bobbin That is the way I roll them  Remember that DC resistance really has nothing to do with output or tone. It would be better to compare resonant peak and inductan...

Re: "Long life" Bourns Pots

Anyone try the PDA24 series? They look nice, specifically designed for guitars and amps. They are a step above the solid shaft bourns pots from AES. Also very affordable, 2-3 bucks a pot on Mouser. http://www.bourns.com/data/global/pdfs/PDA24.pdf They are "ok" the Audio taper is 2 lines not very sm...

wood cabs

These were real sweet, we made them out of Ash with a matching guitar, also did a Korina Set John Shanks wound up with (matching T style guitar) A total bitch to paint though since we had to pick the cabinets up to buff them. I'm actually drawing up the new Jim Kelley hardwood cabs right now in Soli...

Re: Tinnitus - anybody suffering? Any solutions?

I have it in one ear. Occasionally it goes away, I usually forget about it unless I'm reminded (thanks!). Alcohol does make it worse and certain vitamins seem to make it much better like D and B and Ginko. It is so hit and miss I just hope there is never a time when I loose my hearing and that is al...

Re: Should you 'upgrade' screen resistors?

A resistor is not a fuse, it is a resistor. It does the job it is told to do, just like a fuse is doing its job when it pops from carrying too much current. Install a fuse instead. Well yes of course that is preferred but isn't original. The point is don't make them bigger unless you add a fuse and...

Re: Should you 'upgrade' screen resistors?

The 1 watt resistor only blows if there's a tube problem - it's telling you something. If you want a tube short to carry on conducting until the line fuse blows, then >=5 watt resistor should be used. A 2 watt resistor might get super hot and damaged but still hang in there, walking wounded, maybe ...

Re: Gibson Factory Raided at Gun point

It is really a bureaucratic mess and like John Suhr said at TGP, it looks like he would have to pay a $190 fee to put one abalone dot on a neck. I don't understand this bit at all? You need to have a been registered with Fish and Game $100 Anytime you make any shipment that could be confused with e...

Re: 5E8A build

As for the output transformer, I'd love to hear more details if you have them but I feel like I'm prying for information now. For me at least it's more just a curiosity because I'm probably leaving the Stancor hifi iron I have in there, it sounds super with this amp already. Well it was stock very ...

Re: Amp selector/switcher

Hi guys, Hopefully this is a quickie for someone. I've now built several of the D'clone amps and would like to be able to switch from one amp to another with a footswitch without ground loop hum issues. Does anyone know of a schem/web link, so that I can build my own buffered amp switcher. I've tri...

Re: 5E8A build

I use all NOS 6072's in the first few tube sockets as I find that swapping in 12AX7's make this amp unbearably gainy. Any comment on the tube choice that Clapton uses? (tube type, brands, etc..). We used stock Sovtek Fender 5881, reliability was paramount, we tried some highly regarded and recommen...

Re: 5E8A build

The other key that was a tough nut to crack on the repro amps I made was the tone of the cabinet. Baffle being VERY important. Care to share any more regarding the baffle? Floating? Pine vs ply? Thickness? Any added stiffener? Thanks! It was old, thin, super flexible and falling apart. They pretty ...

Re: 5E8A build

Clapton's Twins are nothing like standard ones. They are solid state rectified with 4x output tubes from what I remember. John Suhr mentioned over at HugeRacksInc broadly how they'd been modified sometime before (since he did them) and the only resemblance to a stock Tweed Twin is the cabinet reall...
