Thanks for showing these max.
How did you interface these with an LED in terms of mounting and distance apart?
Thanks,
Phil

Re: assessing power (watts) at typical 12ax7 cathode
Hi guys, thanks for your informed comments. The mods I intend to experiment with are well known mods already used in various amps such as Fat cap mods, JEL mods, plus NFB and MID Raw.. The opto i'm referring to is an LED Driven resistive opto coupler. My work computer doesn't seem to allow posting c...

assessing power (watts) at typical 12ax7 cathode
Hello, I was hoping to get some feedback on the typical electrical action at the cathode of a typical 12ax7 in a typical guitar tube amp (if there is such a thing). I'm about to delve into some switching mod experiments at the cathodes of 12ax7's for various reasons, mostly gain and some high pass e...

Re: MOSFET B+ reducer
Thank you all, such great informative and helpful feedback! I like that clip! It has occurred to me that the screwing down of a 220 could possibly be biasing the "pressing force" in one area where the other end of the 220 may be lifting up compromising the heat transfer. A senior engineer where I wo...

Re: 5V4 recifier with 6L6WGB pair
Hi Sluckey, My idea to do that was based on Mike at KCANos (who sold me the matched tube pair) said that I probably shouldn't be putting more than 470vdc on the plate of these (they are the Phillips JAN 6L6WGB). I realize that if I don't do anything the B+ with the Mojotone Bassman PT will be around...

Re: 5V4 recifier with 6L6WGB pair
Hi Stevem, Actually, this amp only ever used or has one speaker. I love the sound of 2 speakers but, in my older age I'm trying to keep things a bit more compact and lighter. Everyone in my bands yells at me for having to lug big 50 watt amps into the trucks. I laugh at them but, I guess its gradual...

Re: 5V4 recifier with 6L6WGB pair
Maybe it would be smart to stick to my original plan to use the B+ Mosfet reducer circuit to cut the B+ down a bit and stick to a good ol' GZ34 rect tube. Using a 5V4 seems like it may perform but possibly on the edge regarding input voltage and Filter cap max. I think it was certainly worth conside...

Re: 5V4 recifier with 6L6WGB pair
Thanks nworbetan. Is the taxing of the 5V4 referring to the turn on in-rush current? I could strap a 50K - 100K resistor across the Standby switch and use that as a soft-start mechanism. I did that to a new amp build I am doing and it was nice to see the first filter cap charge nice and slowly - 35 ...

5V4 recifier with 6L6WGB pair
Hello, While I would normally not consider doing this, under these circumstances I'd be curious what you think While I'm getting near the end of an amp rebuild that will really be like a Pro reverb with a pair of 6L6WGB's, I'm wondering if I could get away with using a 5V4 rectifier considering the ...

Re: MOSFET B+ reducer
Thanks guys for commenting on this. Now, I think it is worth bolting the Mosfet directly to the chassis with some good thermal grease right next to the power ground. One thing I can say is that this amp will never be pushed to heavy volumes as it will be played clean in small to medium rooms and mic...

Re: MOSFET B+ reducer
Hello, I'd like to check in here for a sanity check on my understanding (or mis-understanding) of how I may safely go about fastening and heatsinking my 20 volt Mosfet zener B+ reducer to my amp/chassis. This is a 35ish watt AB763 with 6L6WGB NOS tube pair. It has a Blackface Bassman PT which will b...

Re: Possibilities for switch or Pot adjustable preamp plate voltages
Thanks for stopping by. Now that I think if it, I may have been playing it "way too safe" looking at those super power Ohmite pots. It occurred to me that the resistors in the power nodes are often are sufficed by 3 Watt resistors. I was just finishing off the Bias control - with bias balance that I...

Re: Possibilities for switch or Pot adjustable preamp plate voltages
Thats sounds like a good idea martin. I was just looking at Ohmite power rheostats and they are upwards of $90.00 for a 25 watt or 12.5 watt 1K rheostat. I'm sure they are good but, ha, it makes the switch solution sound darn good. Plus, when I think about it, 3 voltage options sounds more than enou...

Possibilities for switch or Pot adjustable preamp plate voltages
Hello, While reading some threads here on "Tone vs plate voltage" type topics, I noticed that a few folks had remarked on say, having a pot in series with the first power node resistor as well as a comment on power scaling. Over the next month or so I will be experimenting with largely preamp plate ...

Re: MOSFET B+ reducer
Man o man, this is a gem of a thread, thank you all for your useful and generous input. Amazing. I'm finishing off a rebuild of my first tube amp which was a Blackvibe 6L6. Nice amp, worked flawlessly except it was way to clean for the live music I play and I sought to get it closer to a typical Fen...
