Re: Express Tube

Hi guys,

if you can't get your hands on some good NOS tubes turn to the newer ones you can buy these days.
Specially when it comes to noise and hiss I prefer:
- V1 new mullard short plate CV 4004/ECC83;
- V2 en V3 : Tung sol ECC83/12AX7.

Re: TW input on pin 7 vs hiss

Hi guys,

thanks for replys.
I must say, with the use of a ECC832 I get the same response on the Volume pot like Geetarpicker.
Until I find an other/better solution for the hiss, I go with the ECC832.

Re: TW input on pin 7 vs hiss

Hi guy's, thanks for the reply. As said I'm trying to find somethng to fix the hiss problem. Ofcourse gives the use of a ECC832 less gain. But, with a ECC83 in the input stage there is imo no practicle use of a gain setting from 3/4 to max volume. (Explosion level) With the use of a ECC832 it shifts...

TW input on pin 7 vs hiss

Hi Guy's, like many builders and users of TW amps I had, from the start, some struggeling with the amound of hiss. With exeption of my SE Express that I've build, the Liverpool and Express had realy to much of it. I've tried other tubes like 12AY7, ECC82, ECC81. It tempered the hiss but the sound ch...

Re: Bias voltage/ma problem

Hi, I think there is nothing wrong. If you change R29 you will get a different negative voltage range in the trim pot. If the negative voltage is rising to possitive you get automaticly more mAmps running through your output tubes. Measure the plate voltage. devide the wattage of the tube (EL34 is 2...

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?

Hi Guy's, I've tested all kind off different Celestion speakers (Alnico and Ceramic) I could find for my Express and Liverpool amp. I must agree that the old G12M (herritage) sounds always very good. But.... I also try every new type celestion speaker that comes out. Early this year I was extremely ...

Re: Express Parallel Capacitor

Here is a letter Ken sent me back in the day. I had a Liverpool at the time that I liked but thought was a bit too bright, and he sent me some parts for a little tweak. It mentions that he was starting to do this in all his Liverpools from then forward. That said much more recently I also tried it ...

Re: Liverpool redplating

Sorry guys, I think I've solved the problem. I used 2 different matched pairs. (Tung-sol) I pulled 2 of the 4 tubes (so one pair of 2 EL84) and the problem comes up after some time. So this set doesn't work. Replaced the 2 tubes by the other that I had pulled earlyer and no problem aat all. Amp runs...

Liverpool redplating

Hey Guys, I have some troubles with my selfbuild liverpool Did a burn-in test for 10 hours and no problems at all. Amp sounded very nice. But now, a few days later when the amp is on for an hour or so it begins to redplate at the EL84. I messured the voltage over the kathode R's and yes the current ...

Re: Easy killing Liverpool hiss

Hi, Yes, you are right. The new Tung Sol 12AX7 is imo one of the best you can get nowadays of all new productions. I've tried them in the Liverpool and compared them with different exemplares of NOS Philips, Telefunken, Valvo and Teonex. In the Liverpool I got the best results with: V1 (Tung Sol 12A...

Easy killing Liverpool hiss

I've build a nice liverpool with 2x EL84 and it sounds great. Like many others I had (some) problems with the great amount of hiss which was imo to much. I measured 60 dB (C) at 1 meter. It had to be reduced without attacking the sound and feeling of the amp. Mostly is recommended the find good tube...

Re: What causes 150 Hz feedback ?

Problem solved.
It was the radio/tuner.
Put a CD player in the input and everything sounds well.
Thanks for reply's.

Re: Tweed Deluxe Pre-amp voltages

Hi Doc Simons, I think the preamp voltage is fine. The tweed amps (and a lot of older tube amps) mostly have around (10%)150 Volts on the preamp plates. A tubeamp specially made for harmonica has even a lower plate voltage (~100V) A low plate voltage, and small electrolytic caps, gives a little head...

Re: What causes 150 Hz feedback ?

Hi Guy's, thanks for reply. Because the problem only comes up with a radiotuner in the input and not with a guitar, the problem must have to do with the radio reciever. Yep, I live in the Netherlands, so we have 230Volt, 50 Hz. The feedback frequency is realy 150Hz! For a very long time I am a FOH e...
