Re: How does Komet do that?!

To be honest, I dont' know what to expect with alternate rectifiers and caps. I have not seen schematics for any multi-rectifier amps, unfortunately. I have seen some setups where the "beefy" rectifier is on the OT/ power tubes. Then, the other rectifier is mainly running the first stages. If I were...

Re: How does Komet do that?!

It's the surge current that a big cap creates that is "bad" for tube rectifiers. So, if your application does NOT drain the caps, then there is no surge, or at least less of a surge. One can check this with a oscilloscope, monitoring a known resistance. The current spikes could still be in the spec ...

Re: To cap or not!!!!!!

It will always clip the high-end, but it's all a matter of setup, equipment, and personal taste as to if it is desireable or not. For, me it's a matter of stability and preference. I didn't know what Ken Fisher meant when he spoke of the "...instability..." of an amp and that his amps are like a hig...

Re: Multiple Rectifiers? Why?

One of Mesa's large amp heads has THREE rectifiers. I saw them in the back, and they were huge, and have the glass envelope with a bulge in the centre. At first I thought they were the power tubes, but there was only three. The 4 EL34's were there, so the 3 have to be rectifiers. HMM. I don't know w...

Multiple Rectifiers? Why?

Mesa/Boogie has many amps with dual or triple rectifier tubes, but why would they do that? For cases where you need more current than one can provide, that's understandable. But, even the lower-power ones have two big rectifier tubes. Do you think it's for tone reasons? As I understand it, the "sag"...

Re: Which 12AX7 series tubes have the least noise/hum?

I like the GT mullard repro. I use it in the 1st/2nd stage postition on my amps because it has a "bite" to it without being harsh. I typically use 5751 tubes for this, but the mullard clone easily sounds better, and it's much cheaper than NOS 5751's. Try one, and I think you'll like it, but be sure ...

Pics/Info on my new "FOX" hybrid amp

I thought some may want to see what I am up to:

Be sure to take a look at the "FOX" amp pictures, because that amp turned out nice, and has a really unique case.

FOX = Fender + VOX

Which 12AX7 series tubes have the least noise/hum?

I spent some time swapping preamp tubes, and I found that several had much less apparent noise than the others.

I am speaking of zero signal with a hum that is very low, but still some did have quite a bit more effect on hum than the others. The PI position showed this trend most.

Re: Can we set up a comments/problems topic?

I completely understand. To admin a forum is sometimes a chore, but one with a dozen topics, it is a nightmare... Just as long as an occasional "off-topic" is OK, then we are all set!

Perhaps just a link off of the site below would suffice?:

Re: why use 2 resistors in SERIES?

I am looking at the "Blue Angel" by Mesa. The ones in the power supply are most likely just like you say: to split the power so one can use resistors smaller than a volkswagon.... I can see that. I even see this done with caps to allow smaller rated caps in a high voltage place, I got that. In one a...

why use 2 resistors in SERIES?

I am looking at some schematics (not nessesarily wreck, though), and they show several places that have 2 resistors in series in the circuit. Most places have 2 different values and they are not high-wattage either. Why? I can understand if that area has a really high voltage that's above the spec o...

Can we set up a comments/problems topic?

For those with suggestions, or problems with the site/forum, perhaps a topic should be created. While I am on non-wreck issues: Has anyone submited this URL to the search engines? Many won't be able to find this site easy, and the links on other sites won't be there for a while. (at least google, ya...
