Re: Blackface Fender Showman....Sucks with Pedals

Unless the amp has some sort sentimental significance and value, I would strongly agree with the other replies to sell it in stock configuration and build a different amp... a more pedal-friendly platform that is closer to the sound you're ultimately shooting for....less frustration and often less e...

Re: Is there a good book on Tube amp design out there?

I'm the same way, there's just something about having a physical book in my hands that works better for understanding and retaining information, as opposed to reading a computer screen...I have no idea why that is. I agree with mrn1ngstr and xtian, the Robert Megantz and Merlin Blencowe books are ex...

Re: Building The Rocket :)

A friend of mine pointed me towards Small Bear Electronics and their UL1015 Pre-Bonded 600v/20ga wire, my favorite so far for being tough yet easy to work with...15 cents per foot, no need to twist and tin it after stripping, and it comes in 10 different colors. http://smallbear-electronics.mybigcom...

Mountain of rejected tubes...

Just happened across this picture.... Back when tubes we're cheap and plentiful, and Sylvania could afford to chuck them if they didn't test perfect...

Re: Building The Rocket :)

Looking good! The Rocket is a spectacular amp. They sound excellent plugging straight in, yet are very pedal-friendly as well....I tend to like amplifiers for either their clean OR overdriven tones, but the Rocket is great everywhere...for me, it gets into goosebump territory when combined with Cele...

Re: Express Cathode Bypass 22uf vs 25uf

I don't think the average person's ears would hear a discernible difference between 25uf and 22uf...the vast majority of amp builders generally cut the cap values by half and use the closest value cap to that... 25uf, 10uf, 4.7uf, 2.2uf, 1uf, 0.68uf... Here's a link to Richard Kuehnel's very cool ca...

Re: Express and Liverpool Fizz

Diamond on the bottom, pronounced seams on the top, and printed logos that rub off if you breathe on them.....Nice Score!!! On top of being great sounding tubes, they're so well built that they last forever. Killer tube for the phase inverter in Express/Liverpools, and I like them in any position in...

Re: China ax7s

I couldn't get in touch with an acquaintance who has lots of experience with Chinese 12AX7's, he had a large stash of them, I think most were purchased from Magic Parts (Ruby? not sure) quite a while ago.... a great player with great ears, he swears by them in his JMP/JCM 800 Master Vol Marshalls ov...

Re: Newb with tone stack question

On the T75's, I agree with sliberty when he says that they have an overall scooped quality...but you might not be hearing that when paired up with the V30's in your 4x12... Vintage 30's have much more of a pronounced midrange, especially in the 800hz to 2000hz range, which can be way too much/too bo...

My pleasure! I LOVE that he uses that spectrum analyzer to show how different component values and wiring methods change the guitar's EQ sweep, much easier to understand!
