Re: Choke placement in early Tweed circuits
Stopped back in to say that the alnico cream sounds ridiculously good with this circuit. The speaker is smooth but articulate. How rare. Some might say dark, but really a re-eq'ing of the amp was all that was needed. The GREAT part about having to turn the treble up is that both tone controls also a...

Re: Choke placement in early Tweed circuits
Great info Rooster. I've been getting to know the amp with some Weber alnico I had around, and have a Cream Alnico on the way. As it's set up now, "normal" with the plates and screens separated, screen resistors, etc, its super loud and clean with a 12ay7 in V1 and 12ax7 in the other two spots.... V...

Re: Speaker Wire recommendations
Lamp cord from big box stores, every now and again I'll save the cord from a 3prong conversion. Same thing really.

Re: Choke placement in early Tweed circuits
Hammond got some nice big chokes. A CLC or Pi filter sounds and feels different from the standard power supplies with high filtering This is what I'm after, right here. In what way would you say? better yet, would you say CLC sounds different that a standard supply with "normal" filtering? Somethin...

Choke placement in early Tweed circuits
Built a 5E5A Pro into an old chassis yesterday that had a Classic Tone PT w a low V secondary, and a 1750M OT. It sounds fantastic but I'm curious about the power supply. I wired it up "normally", so to speak, with the choke(ok not really.....a 330r 5W resistor) in between the plates and screens, an...

Re: New to me SF Pro Reverb
Thanks Martin, and good to hear from you. From what I understand the screens are at 10 or 12% so still in Pentode, just basically high plates and screens. I'll hang a trimmer off the balance pot so it's there when I need it. I'm temped to do to 220K too, I figure I'll only really hear the difference...

New to me SF Pro Reverb
I picked up a '79/80 Pro Reverb yesterday locally off CL for $425. Kinda unbelievable. Sat on the Austin listing for two weeks, even with a "make me an offer" plea. Worked into the deal was that I fix a Blues Deluxe, that does the random channel switching thing. Fellow techs will know that takes wel...

Re: JCM800 build
Everybody knows that when you say JCM800 you really mean the best Marshall ever built, the split ch 2205. Of course I mean 2203. In these circles, I tend to understand exactly what is meant by "JCM800 build"... a 2203 or 4 that's potentially modified for higher gain, which is exactly what i'm ...

Re: JCM800 build
Anyone used OPTOFET switching, instead of electromechanical relays? For this application I'm just switching 2 master volumes, in the normal spot before the PI in a JCM800. I used to always use Colossal's relay boards, so I'm not familiar with these. https://grangeramp.com/product/optofet-channel-swi...

JCM800 build
Hey all, I haven't built anything from scratch(for anyone else) in a couple years. My world is repairs now, which is great, but every now and again I say OK and build someone something custom. I'm looking forward to it actually! I'm doing a tweaked 800 , but it has to be nearly all from a kit, at le...

Re: MagnaTone? Anyone?
Here's the modern Stereo Twilighter. Fantastic sounding amp but basically 2 Deluxe reverbs in Stereo, with vibrato. Someone had asked about subs, Martin M. developed a varistor subsitute years ago that i tested in a magnatone build, that nailed it. All the info is on the forum somewhere

Re: Rusty Bassman
Back on this project. To recap, if was a rusty SF Bassman someone gave me. Soaked it nd painted it. I just realized that I can do the normal channel of 6G6B and JCM800 in this thing. I found an old board that would work! I don't have the stock I once did so I thought it be both fun and timely to pop...

Re: Vht d-50h tweaks
I had a VHT D50 on the bench for mods the other day. Good sounding amp, owner really liked it but said it wasn't quite open enough, always had to hit it with a pedal to get the top end he wanted. The amp is a 183 to the letter, except for a few things. The OD trimpot was 50K, instead of 100K, but th...
