Re: Monkeymatic Tamalpais - build in progress
A CLC is still a capacitor input supply, since the choke is after the filter cap in the power chain, so the output voltage would be 1.4x the RMS input voltage.

Re: Ive got access to TUBES
TV sweep tubes are my tubes of choice. A short list would be... 6BQ6 6BG6 6DQ6 6LQ6 6LR6 6LF6 6LW6 6CM5 6MH6 6LX6 6DQ5 6KN6 6KD6 6KG6 6JE6 6JS6 6GB5 13E1 ...And all the various odd filament voltage variants of the above tubes. Or anything that looks like them. There are too many types to list! Also ...

This is one of the few times I'm glad I live in Kansas! It was 65 and sunny here today

Re: What to build next?
Alternatively, if you've got any, a pair of BIG sweep tubes (6LF6, 6LW6, 6KG6, 6LR6, and their like) will make 100+ watts with a 2k-ish a-a load and around 150V on the screens and a B+ of ~600V. Just some food for thought.

Re: What to build next?
Well, seeing as you already have the transformers for it, why not a 100w Marshall-ish amp like a Super Lead or 2204?

Re: 50s Intercom Tube Practice Amp
As you noted, you'll definitely need an isolation transformer between the wall plug and the rectifier. The transformer at the input of the amp appears to be there to match the impedance of the speaker, which doubled as a microphone in this setup, to the grid of the 12AU6, which is set up for grid-le...

Hmmm... This is a tough one... but I would have to say that my choices would be: 1. Non-MV Ampeg V2 2. Brownface Fender Super 3. Matamp GT-120 4. Dumble Steel String Singer 5. Marshall 1959 Super Lead 6. Marshall JCM800 2203 7. Mesa/Boogie Mk V 8. Orange Thunderverb 9. Vox AC30 Top Boost 10. Hiwatt ...

Re: Audio Myths Workshop video
I haven't been able to take TGP seriously ever since reading a 10 page thread on the tonal benefits of POWER CORDS, of all things, and then seeing someone trying to sell one in the emporium for $250. Some people will believe any claim if it's attached to an appropriately high price tag.

Re: Two output Trannies in parallel?
Hmmm... when you parallel output transformers, you maintain the turns ratio, but double the inductance, correct? With twice the inductance, you get greatly improved low frequency response and greater output stage headroom because the core doesn't saturate nearly as easily- however, because output tr...

Re: '66 Ampeg Reverberocket II can cap question
Most electrolytic caps are +50/-20% tolerance anyway, so 30uf isn't really that far out of spec. If you're still concerned, you could always put the 30uf and 20uf sections in parallel to get a 50uf cap, which is more than enough.

Re: Sylvania 6550 tubes...information
It's also entirely possible that the tubes are NOS even if not in the original packaging. Not all tubes came in boxes, especially those sold to OEMs or large repair shops, who got their tubes in bulk packaging. It's also possible that the boxes the tubes came in simply fell apart with age and someon...

Re: weirdo tubes amp
Why not just use an isolation transformer and a dropping resistor to light the 50c5s as a pair in series? Seems like it'd definitely save you some complexity and expense. Also, if you're not absolutely dedicated to using what you have on hand tube-wise, TV horizontal sweep tubes might be worth a loo...

Re: Combining capacitors in series and parallel
As long as you use balancing resistors across the series capacitor banks to split the voltage evenly between the caps, you should be fine. I did the same thing when I built a 750V power supply for a monster sweep tube amp I had in the works before time and budget constraints got in the way... I'll g...

Re: Do carbon film resistors dry up?
No, resistors don't dry out over time, although they can drift in value over time, especially older carbon composition resistors. That is an example of heat damage. Either that resistor was severely underrated for it's given duty or something downstream of it is drawing way too much current. What do...

Re: Help, I'm new at this
Was the transformer new for this build, or was it a junk box pull from something else that just happened to be useful? IF it's new, I'd check all your wiring first before blaming the transformer. If everything checks out, then check the transformer for shorted windings with a battery and a neon bulb...
