Re: Mixing Speakers: Favourite Combinations?

The times I mixed it was always at low volume and I was left with meh. Now that I'm in a house with no near neighbors this is an area I'd like to explore but with analysis gear see what is hitting a room mic with and without mixed. There is only the minor detail of analysis gear, mic[s] and software...

Re: Wee Leslie

Nice! I love it when folks build modern versions of classic gear like the Leslie. I - being the snob I am - would have used a 12" speaker and a 40 watt or more amp even knowing the cab would be bigger.

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Really nice work! Wanted to see if you had a good resource for building my first cabinet? Thank you. Longer answer than you probably want. If you know what configuration you want AKA # of speakers and what range you want from the cab AKA open [more airy] or closed [more controlled] I recommend look...

Re: Surprised at the "honk" heard in new G10 Vintage speakers

I'd do some serious experimenting on this before I spent any $$$. I've read over the years ago changing the volume inside the speaker enclosure - primarily on closed back - but I wonder if it would affect the open back? A couple of hard back books in the bottom perhaps. The other - completely rando ...

Re: Surprised at the "honk" heard in new G10 Vintage speakers

Nope. Brand newly built cab, the G10's in there for the first time. I have nothing to compare it too. Phil The reason I ask is I built a 1936 with poplar that was 3" shorter than standard - the owner complained of excessive mids. I'd built them this size in padauk and - if I remember correctly - ma...

Hi Phil,

One thing that keeps poking me in the head - have you had speakers in the cab that sounded good - AKA no honk or excessive mids?

Sorry Phil, I have not experience with these. I do wonder does a speaker break in or does our ear surrender?

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Well, that came out great. And 50lbs is better than 76lbs or whatever a plywood 4x12 works out to, but I think that's close. What do you think of the four Blue speakers, tonally. Absolute magic or about as good as any other combination of speakers? This - absolute magic - with the right amp and som...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

So far it sounds like I expected - lively and resonant [in a good way]. After about an hour of 100-105dB it seems to be fine structurally. Edge glued joints are very strong - to date - but we'll see in the future. From a production standpoint edge glued baffles / backs aren't economical easily takin...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Finished - for now. The baffle isn't quite straight so I'll be fixing that when I put in the walnut piping. The cab with speakers installed is 50.0lb which is light for a 1960B. https://i.imgur.com/wZIqLnd.jpg I had fun wiring it up - first go round I was getting 25ohm?!? I'd measure the first two s...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Many thanks for taking the time needed to document your progress. Kinda plain for what I've seen you do but elegant nevertheless and your attention to detail is excellent. BTW, I am a big fan of people who know how to undrill a hole that's too big or in the wrong place ;-) Hi Phil, I stole the plug...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Got to here tonight and ran out of gas and lock washers for #10 screws. Mumble. In addition to the 'foot' stretcher I used a reversed clamp to apply tension. Worked out but I had to push the wooden box to keep it from popping off. https://i.imgur.com/Sg5T67S.jpg Rubber grill cloth is a bit a challen...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

I missed some updates. I'm to here, baffle ring, cleats and baffle cut and fitted. https://i.imgur.com/F6MCIvK.jpg I got delayed by a recent house purchase and some truly hilly billy electrical wiring not even close to code that started a fire in my crawlspace on Thursday and 'luckily' burnt through...

Re: 1/2" Baltic Birch ply for two V30's in combo

I would not hesitate to make a 2x12 out of 1/2" Baltic Birch. Just brace it well and don't let a gorilla take care of your cab. This is the key - treat your other gear like you treat your guitar - politely [except for you neanderthals who don't]. I suspect 90%+ of players don't gig so I find the gi...

Re: Radiata pine 4x12 with Celestion Blues

Baffle cleats and baffle installed. https://i.imgur.com/qvcc5HZ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/F6MCIvK.jpg There's a .450" gap surrounding the baffle from the sides to allow for .125" walnut piping and the EC repro cloth which is about .075" thick and a bit of breathing room. I wasted lots of time trying t...
