Re: Contour/cut control - useless?
A cut control (especially in an amp with negative feedback), isn't really a great idea.

Re: "A box later" Dumble
Frankly, I wasn't impressed with the notadumble. It'll be interesting to see if the estate goes after them for the name. What amp did you play it through Andy? Your amps sound great by the way. The notadumble in front of your amps would just mess up an already good sound. Garden variety Fender Hot ...

Re: German YouTube video -- circuit walkthrough and measurements
The SSS power amp is similar to many audiophile designs, as well as borrowing design cues from the SVT, depending on the version you see. A PI and a cathode follower can allow drive up into grid current, although the SVT's had a pair of limiter diodes on the front end to stop that. One SSS design wa...

Looks like he's endorsing them. I lose confidence rapidly when someone misspells the name of their "amp designer" (Jim Kelly instead of Jim Kelley)...sigh. Pricy stuff !

Re: 3rd Power Sink amp
I gotta laugh at this. It's kinda like a lame excuse to get a patent on nothing special I guess.erwin_ve wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 5:44 pm I looked up their patent on the "powerscaling".
Dual pot: one for regular master volume and 1 for changing the PI cathode resistor .

Smart Belle is out of business. They did attempt a solid state "Dumble". It was about as successful as his solid state "Trainwreck".
I'll say this: Lance doesn't give up, although it does look like he may (finally) be out of the amp business.

Re: Are 65 Amps still in business?
Dan has been posting youtube and social media video chats in which he has been showing a "new 65 amps prototype", doing playing demos and taking questions from the audience. I don't know exactly what 65 amps is or will be at this point. They were indeed bought by BAD (not sure of the actual/financia...

Re: Carr Mercury
I'm glad you are "impressed". I honestly think Carr amps sound pretty good. They feel and sound like a really good old BF Fender (likely because the circuits are basically similar).
I do have a real problem with any amp covered in useless silicone snot.

Re: 6U10, 6AC10, 6D10, 6AV11 Tubes
I've thought for a long time about making an adaptor for putting a 12AX7 or whatever number would work best, and an LND-150 fet to cover the third triode section and be done with it. You might even do it all FET's. You could change the socket to a 9-pin in some models (except most Ampeg's have them ...

Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?
I do wonder sometimes if it’s such a great idea to replace old caps when they are obviously in good condition, the rationale is people are looking for the sound and response from the vintage parts and I’m cutting them out and throwing them away. Of course my opinion maybe deeply flawed and if you s...

Re: What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
Maybe manufacturers like FUCHSAUDIO will start retrofitting a suitable MOV across each half-primary as a simpler and more direct way to mitigate such faults. It's not a substantial expense in production, although we never did it in 20+ years. We rarely get amps back with this type of failure. Hate ...

Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?
We use F&T and MOD in the shop. MOD's are a great value, most likely imported, but no reliability issues. F&T are top of the line, a little more money, but I think they sound a touch better. We use them in vintage amps always, especially since they are often owned by cork-sniffers. We use in our twe...

Re: What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
We use ceramic sockets for our power and preamp tubes. I usually use them for repairs (chassis permitting) as well. We do both manufacture and repair. More often than not, we find guys with bad speaker wiring or cabinet issues will end up with the 2/3 burn. It's the most common spot (apart from a ra...

Re: Tremolo Changes after EL84 to 6V6 Swap
You forget the EL84 and 6V6 have a different bias point, so the modulation will be weaker with a tube needing more negative voltage (and more tremolo swing too), to get the same effect. You could raised R-72 to get more output from the chip (clever circuit btw), or toy with the divider into the LND-...
