Re: JTM45 transformer selection for 5881s

If your pilot lamp has solder lugs, I would be inclined to use those to tie the transformer primaries together (0 and 0, 120 and 120) like this. Note the fuse and power switch are on the hot lead, in that order, with the hot lead from the IEC going to the tail of the fuse holder. It is one of those...

Here’s a PDF of the DIYLC file I’m working on for this build for reference: https://www.dropbox.com/s/exckq65717m0 ... t.pdf?dl=0

Re: JTM45 transformer selection for 5881s

Dumb question, but their PT (https://modulusamplification.com/JTM45-Vintage-Style-Power-Transformer-with-Clamp-Bracket-MOD0002-P5295817.aspx) has two 120v leads on the primary, as well as two 0v leads. Which pair would I use for 120v wiring (USA), or does it matter? Both 0-120V primary leads should...

Re: JTM45 transformer selection for 5881s

Hi all, So I've decided to go with the PT and OT from Modulus. I believe both are Dagnall, UK-made? Dumb question, but their PT (https://modulusamplification.com/JTM45-Vintage-Style-Power-Transformer-with-Clamp-Bracket-MOD0002-P5295817.aspx) has two 120v leads on the primary, as well as two 0v leads...

Re: "No More Russian Vacuum Tubes in 2022"

So I guess that leaves Chinese and Slovakian tubes, eh? I think the Chinese factory had a fire and it is unclear if/when they may even be back. So, that leaves just the Slovakian factory to supply all the demand. Not looking good for this hobby at the moment... Mike There’s still Psvane tubes from ...

JTM45 transformer selection for 5881s

For a JTM45 build using 5881 power tubes (e.g. NOS Tung Sol), what power transformer and/or B+ do you recommend? (I won’t have enough room in my 1x12" combo shell for KT66s.) I’m considering Mercury P4550JT-G4 (380VDC) and G2 (420VDC), as well as Hammond 291KX (345VDC I think?). Similarly, which out...

Re: TAD 18-watt TMB – Reducing Hiss

How are you hearing crosstalk? Are you plugging in two guitars, one to each channel? Did you install a MV? Have you swapped tubes or tried other tubes? What is your bias now? What is your wall voltage? Using MF plate resistors helps with hiss, which apparently you did. Hi, thank you for the respons...

TAD 18-watt TMB – Reducing Hiss

I recently completed a build based on the TAD 18-watt TMB kit. (See schematic below.) Deviations from the schematic: 470R / 3W screen grid resistors (in place of 100R / 2W) 150R / 5W cathode bias resistor (in place of 120R / 5W) The above changes were in response to the amp initially running the EL8...

Re: Need help with TAD 18-watt TMB Build

Got the amp running today. Noticed that one of the EL84s was running a bit hot. The label on it was sizzling. But only one of the tubes.

What could lead to one being too hot?

Re: Need help with TAD 18-watt TMB Build

Changes to the layout for 120V would be as shown below. Just un-solder your power switch and rotate it 180 degrees to get "on" to be "on." If your PT is toast, Hammond 290PAZ is their 18W replacement. The windings match the TAD diagram, with nearly the same lead colors (compare the diagrams), but c...

Need help with TAD 18-watt TMB Build

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some assistance with my TAD 18-watt TMB build. I’ve mostly completed the work, but just as I started to do some “safe” AC testing, I ran into issues (started seeing smoke from PT, and so immediately shut it down). Additionally, my mains/power switch seems to be backwards...
