Re: Tube subs (12AY7, 12AU7) in old Traynor bassmasters?

Thanks guys! Just spent a few minutes subbing at V1 to start with- both tubes did make the volume pot more linear than the 12AX7, without any adjustment needed in tone controls. I'm not currently gigging, but using these tubes would probably be very helpful in dialing in the right volume more easily...

Re: Tube subs (12AY7, 12AU7) in old Traynor bassmasters?

Thanks! As you probably know, those 60s-70s Traynor tube amps are pretty rugged both physically and electrically. I did some more reading and research, and the caveat about preamp tube subs for some amps- best I can tell - might be relevant for switching tubes to a higher amplification factor (gain ...

Tube subs (12AY7, 12AU7) in old Traynor bassmasters?

Hello, I have some old bassmaster amps, all 3 preamp tubes are 12AX7. The volume pots on these amps go very quickly from silent (at '0', or say 7 o'clock) to LOUD (at '1', 8 o'clock) to VERY loud at 3 (9 o'clock). Beyond 3, it just thickens up more and starts overdriving. I'm not really interested i...

power tube socket malfunction- cause?

Hello, I have a two 6l6 power tube Juke amp (small builder in New Hampshire), had NOS tubes for ~ 14 years, but one of them had the pin break & lose vacuum, so replaced with Russian 5881s. The power tube socket nearest the phase inverter tube lights up, but without typical heat and also without any ...

Re: Switching speakers on the same amp in real time

I was wondering about using a simple passive DOD A/B switch to alternate two separate cabs. Head is an old Traynor, they're pretty indestructible, but iirc someone wiser than me said this still may be risky to the output transformer.

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Hello guys, just a follow-up- the amp started behaving normally (no voltage differences between chassis-ground-neutral sites), likely because in probing things (after unplugging AND discharging capacitors & other standard safety measures), I probably partially fixed a cold solder joint of green grou...

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Thank you so much for the logical guide, I really appreciate it! I'll give that a try; I may also bypass the accessory AC plug, as it's a 2-pronger. Thanks again.

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Reviewing things, with the death cap connected, the amp acted like it's old 2 prong self- flip the ground switch one way (presumably white/neutral), no buzz and no chassis voltage. Flip it the other way (presumably black/hot), you get buzz and chassis voltage. Disconnect the cap, you just get buzz a...

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

No, no continuity between chassis & any mains (black & white wires from AC cord) measured on terminals of AC accessory outlet, circuit breaker, power, ground or standby switches, thanks.

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Did you test the ground wire in the Mains cable for continuity ? thanks, yes I did. The following are intact circuits: ground prong to green ground wire anchored to chassis. Both hot (black) and neutral (white) prongs are in continuity with their terminals on the accessory plug, AC power switch, an...

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Thanks! That diagram was very helpful. Well, I disconnected the 'death cap' from the ground switch, had amp connected to speaker and guitar (on a stand, not on me), kept it on standby mode, powered it up. Didn't touch anything, just used my little voltage detector.....which lit up and sung in a 2 fo...

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Remove the yellow cap from the ground switch. Thanks - I've seen some posts where they say (after the 3 prong cord has been installed with green to chassis ground), that you should remove the ground switch entirely. Others say to just remove the 'death cap' , but that the ground switch and it's wir...

Re: Traynor YBA-1A Ground switch/hum even with a 3 prong cord...?

Thanks, the added 3rd (green) ground is wrapped & soldered in to a dedicated crimp-hole in the chassis, pretty solid. The resistance as desribed above is 3 ohm, so I think it's a robust chassis ground. Will try to remove the cap tomorrow & see what happens. Not sure why the tech left it in, he went ...
