Re: The Immortal Amplifier

I'm actually OK with electrolytics. The Kemet PEG124 series are rated for 27,500 hours at 105c. That's kinda-plenty. https://content.kemet.com/datasheets/KEM_A4011_PEG124.pdf They're not too huge, and plenty good for bulk capacitance and they're not unreasonably priced for axial caps these days. If...

Re: The Immortal Amplifier

Are the Solen Film caps smaller than the motor run film caps? I was going to use some in a Sunn 2000S that I have because the chassis is huge and has the room. I'd hesitate on trying to fit them in a Fender BF/SF chassis though. No way they would fit into a Tweed Fender chassis. Obviously they can b...

Re: is music-electronics-forum down?

Hopefully nosaj can get it figured out soon in between everything else he has going on.

Re: is music-electronics-forum down?

Yeah and this time it seems like it is more down than previous times. Can't even get it to load. Wonder if maybe some payment wasn't made or the DNS is messed up or something. When I tried to load the Sunn page it came back after a moment and basically showed that everything is working except the si...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

greg, my hat is off to you for all of the work that you put into that amp. I can't imagine how many hours of work it took to design and then perform all of those upgrades while working in such a tight space with parts that were wrapped and coiled, then soldered. de-soldering must have been a nightm...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

Here's an interesting way to upgrade the reverb on a Silvertone 1484/1485 if anyone is interested.

It does sound better than stock!

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

Nuke, you could be right. I was going off a few old threads at the Hoffman forum about this. There was the one below, and then another I can't find right now that said something about the 150V caps being really cheap because they were used for something else. In any case, they used to be very common...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

The voltage multiplier power supply is an interesting choice technically, and I don't think it was because they were being "cheap" in choosing it. The stacked voltage doublers is actually based in cheapness. If you use the voltage doubler power supply, then the caps you need to use are lower voltag...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

Yeah you got that right Nuke! It was a TON of work, but not just the reverb. I did so many things to this amp. I think it took me around 9 months to do everything. It's not just any point to point chassis - Danelectro made these hard to work on since they wrapped all the part leads around and throug...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

I understand the problem with paper documents. I prefer to work on paper as well. I always love to see amp porn photos. I'd be especially interested in the reverb mods. Here are some pics. For the reverb mods, as I said, it is just a transplanted Fender circuit, and key to that is to rearrang...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

Greg, it sounds like you've done all of the mods that I was thinking about doing with my old 1484 head, but never got around to doing. I was thinking of exactly the same type of Fender reverb mod, building a little reverb box that the amp could sit atop (for holding the pan). I agree that the way t...

Re: silvertone 1484 reverb pan repair notes:

My 1484 was just as clean when I picked it up but for its blown OT. I'm assuming you've fixed it already, but if not, this particular OT is one that Weber sells a copy of: https://www.tedweber.com/wot1484/ The original transformers were 4 ohm on one tap and 2.66 ohm on the other one. The same trans...

Re: Repair/restore my Sprague Tel-Ohmike help needed.

I've got a TO-6. I've used it for reforming caps and checking for leakage. It is handy for that since the power supply goes up to 600V and you can check at rated voltage for the caps instead of whatever a DMM will check at. It works fine, so I haven't had to mess with it. I would rather have the TO-...

Re: Can a 12AU7 designed clean gain stage be as loud as a 12AX7?

Another thing you could try if the 12AU7 half isn't working out for you is to swap the tube for a 12AY7. A gain of 44, same pinout, and you could set up one side for higher gain and the other for lower gain. I happen to like the 'sound' of that tube more than the other common ones like the 12AX7, 12...
