Re: being sober blows
You said it. It's been years for me, and I still get urges. Going to Denver for 6 weeks next Tuesday, and I can't partake in the Rocky Mountain High because it might interfere with a med I have to take every day (for life) to suppress my immune system. It's been posited, in small studies and anecdot...

Re: Express 1x12 build
Bill,
Check out this discussion of the AX84 cab design. Alex Kenis, the designer of the cab, is one smart dude.

And here are the drawings:

Phil,
Did you get Cat Scratch Fever?
The troubles y'all have made it through make mine feel like nothing, as far as playing guitar goes. Thanks for the inspiration!

Wow, brewdude
It's amazing you could play bar chords!
At least you live near lots of great wineries and breweries to ease your pain
Best regards,
Ken

Re: Obscure Trainwreck derived circuits?
I guess this qualifies as a TW variant - the Talon amp was designed by Gothik Amps, a sub-group of the AX84 forum, about 10 years ago. The preamp is pretty much straight TW. The rest is kinda wierd but nice - the sound is very Wreckish but also kinda smoother. (I hate describing tone :x ) https://im...

Re: Express 1x12 build
+1 on the AX84 cab. Sounds great with any speaker in the "greenback" family. I built this one with a port for testing a handful of speakers. My favorite was the Eminence Swamp Thang. A G12H30 sounded great also, but I'm always scared to blow those speakers out, with even a 20W amp. https://imgur.com...

Re: First Stage Hiss
I've always used 5751 tubes in the first stage of my higher-gain amps, and I bought a bunch of JAN 5751's on eBay, and select for lowest hiss. Works wonders on amps I've built with the TW preamp. Of course, I try to do everything "right" in the design and layout, but first-stage hiss is a hard bugge...

That is so cool!
I wonder how many colleges have anything even remotely like that?
It probably felt like a magical, exotic subject to your students

Learning to play guitar - all over again
I haven't played guitar for more than 5 minutes for over a year now, due to my medical adventures. Today, I tried to play for about an hour, using my PRS SE and my little Katana SS amp. Before, I could set the amp on the Clean setting, add some distortion with a TS, and get a pretty good impression ...

Re: Decent amp for a beginner?
Modeling amps are an easy way for a beginner to get a good sound quickly, which will make you want to play more. The Katanas are great, as is the Yamaha, and the newer Fender small amps with modeling have gotten good reviews too. Google "practice amps" and/or "modeling amps" and you should find lots...

Re: 2X12 cabinet wired for 4 and 16 ohm
You can get even fancier if you add a dpst switch to that panel, which breaks the connections between the two speakers. This allows the cab to be 8 ohms, by using either speaker by itself (it's slightly quieter, too)

Re: Stunt soldering
This is where a spring-loaded clip-on heat sink is nice (or a roach clip/forcep) - it holds the cut-off lead steady and keeps the heat from melting the PCB solder joint. The only problem is fitting it in there if the PCB is tightly spaced. This could be combined with Leo's method of leaving the old ...

Re: French polish
This is long, but it works so well I had to post it (from John/basicaudio on AX84): 1. Sand bare wood to 220 2. Mix Boiled linseed oil, Minwax fast drying polyurethane and either Mineral spirits naphtha or turpentine in equal parts for about a pint. It's not crucial to get it perfect at all. Naphtha...

I'm back
Hi everybody. This is Ken Moon. I've been away from Ampgarage for quite a while due to liver problems, but I got a transplant almost 4 months ago, and I am finally well enough to get back on the amp board and see what interesting things have been going on :-) I'm staying in Jacksonville to be close ...
