The first person I know that saw him live when he first made the scene in Nashville in the late 80's said he was playing through a really hold Peavey SS amp. He said he sounded amazing.
I was lucky to get an impromptu slide lesson from Sonny at a recording session in about 1990. Nice guy.

Re: Ry Cooder's Borderline Special
I worked at a NAMM show in Anaheim in the 80's. James Demeter had the booth next to us. He's a super-nice guy and works on Ry's amps (or did back then). He introduced me to Ry at the show, which was cool. James told me that Ry was so pissed off about dealing with HAD that he smashed his amp on HAD's...

I remember HAD trying to talk me into ordering one of these, built from scratch back in the 80's. Interesting to see one in some form.

Robben lent his ODS to Mark Whitfield for his first solo CD. I think it often gets overlooked that ODS's have a 'jazz' switch. How thoughtful of the man.

Re: Rack Mount Reverb/Delay sugguestions?
When I talked to HAD in the '80's he was very excited about controling an ODS with a 2290, which has switching capability via the effects loop.

Which reminds me...one of the phone conversations I with HAD back in the late '80 he told how cool it was to control an Overdrive Special via a TC Electronic 2290. Somewhere I have the control wiring that he had me write down but it'd probably child's play to you builders.

I have one, quietly resting in the various racks of '80's and '90's rack gear. It was not bad sounding and it has a tube in it as I recall, to impress your geek buddies.

Dumble would test 8 ohm speakers ,( which vary in actual impedance), and find ones that were closest to 4 ohm.

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?
I was at the filming of his first Austin City Limits appearance, in 1984. I don't recall an ODS but I think I remember the SSS, two Twins, and Marshall. That sounds like the punch line to a joke. I think I remember Kinison talking about twins.
Anyway his tones were glorious.

greiswig, what kind of paperwork is involved? I would imagine you have to get some kind of paper before you cross? I didn't need anything other than my passport. I explained to them that I was a performing musician, they opened up a couple of cases and looked things over, and waved me through. Same...

OK here's a stupid Dumble question: did the big guy ever make an amp with a built-in Dumblator ? I remember reading that Lowell George's had built-in reverb.

If you have not seen this video by RF (about Miles) it’s great fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLTmZX6Ts0Y That's an awesome oral history. The one thing that struck me is that he is the only person I've ever heard who didn't think it was a practical joke when someone said "Miles wants to talk t...
