And another Rocket group build - (Clips added)

Just fired it up. All went well. A question I have, the clean tone is great, but it breaks up pretty early. This is about the same as an AC-15 type amp I built which is basically an AC-30 with only two el84s. By the time the volume gets to about 9 o'clock, it is getting pretty dirty. Is this normal?...

Re: VOX Powered Rocket with VVR2

RJ I did build KOC's AC-15, which was basically an AC-30, with two power tubes and SS rectification. Great amp. I ended up using Hammond PT and a Vox AC-15 OT. I wanted smaller power. I don't really see the need for huge amps as I am not gigging anymore. I just finished up Ron's kit that he sold me ...

Re: Help needed with amp choice, hrm or nonhrm

I suggest all of this knowing nothing about the young lads playing abilities... Remember, he is a young guitar player. It is possible that neither amp will be ideal for him. If he is playing metal, what is his picking style like and how will the amp respond to that? It would be a shame to build him ...

Re: Best 12" speaker for ODS and Open or Closed-Back Cab

I just found a pair of used EVM-12L speakers taken out of a silver faced twin, and finally got to take them for a test drive last night. This is for my 100W ODS HRM. Previously I had a pair of Eminence RWB in the there. Night and day. The EVMs are very smooth. This would be up and down the frequency...

Re: Speaker Cabinet Frequency Response

I admittedly have little experience around guitar speakers & cabinets. One question about closed back cabinets, isn't there a resonance frequency depending upon the size of the cabinet. Obviously, it would be in the shorter waves as they bounce of the back and are either in or out of phase with the ...

Re: What equip do u use for recording?

There are many axioms in recording. One being, "If you want to, you can easily spend a million dollars recording a session." In the end, if it sounds good and everyone likes it, it was a successful recording. They are called "recording engineers" for a reason.

Re: What equip do u use for recording?

everybody has their tricks and preferences..... the one thing that I would encourage you to do.... no matter what you do try to get gear that uses balanced ins and outs...... go over your cables and rack to isolate the grounds..... and really read the manuals this alone will make a huge difference ...

Re: What equip do u use for recording?

I hate that part, I would rather play. I started as a guitar player, but also engineer, produce, play various instruments. Yes, that is the most important part. Engineering should not interfere with playing. As for software, I am using Sonar. Everyone will tell you the one they use is the best, but...

Re: What equip do u use for recording?

Can you clue in a newb about the dual signal inputs? What benefit do you get from having a mic'd input plus a direct input? That would be re-amping. The main idea is that in setting up the recording, you have numerous variables, amp settings, speaker cabinet (selection), microphone selection, micro...

Re: amps and solutions

I know it's really neither here nor there, but what kills me is that even amp makers who should know better (like Mojave amps) put "Speaker Dampening" controls and such on amps. So.....does it really squirt water onto the speakers? No, he is right. Dampen is used as it should be, the sound has been...

Re: What equip do u use for recording?

Echo. Reasonably priced PCI cards or firewire interface for a computer. You can't go wrong with them. Good preamp is actually really important easily the most important part of the recording chain. In a pinch, using the pres from a Mackie mixer is not a bad way to go. I ended up building a tube mic ...

Re: amps and solutions

That's funny isn't it.
The fabric was dampening all the tone!
Geez, people.
Yeah, but I bet he looked really cool on stage.

Reason #101 why most musicians should not be audio engineers or amp techs.

Re: speakers opinions

so where would you place a RWB in the scheme of things?
I threw two into my Twin Reverb, which are better than the Red Ruby's that were already in there. I also use them for an HRM 100W head I built. Good, but not as good as my non-HRM 50W w/ G12-65.

Re: Celestion gh65 v Scumbacks v Austin speaker works v Weber

I built a non-hrm 50W combo with a G12-65 and the cleans are really nice. Better than an eminence RWB. I usually play it with three gain stages, clean, OD, OD w/PAB, and it goes through all three very well. The shifts are very subtle and not so obvious, except hearing more sustain, but the tone is f...
