Re: Contour/cut control - useless?
I originally put in a Vox style Cut Control on my Marshall 18 Watt style build. Very different amp to yours but I also found it to be pretty useless. Not much later it was ripped out and the front panel hole used for a VVR pot. I found the exact same thing in the 18W (Lite IIb) amp. It needed nothi...

Re: Screen Voltages 5E3/6G3 Build
B-nodes dropped slightly less than one percent, except for B+2 which dropped from 410v to 403v. Very subtle change in sound. Yes, it's a bit smoother and I don't seem to hear the instantaneous mild crunchy fizz when slamming full chords when the amp is cranked anymore. It was pretty loud in this 11...

Re: The Immortal Amplifier
I am putting an amp together right now with RG's MOV protection method for the OT; one each between the plate and centertap leads for a cathode biased push-pull pair of EL34s.

Re: Screen Voltages 5E3/6G3 Build
Are you sure your screens are being fed by B+2 and not B+1? With B+1 dropped across 1k (and then across your screen resistors), your screen voltage should be much lower. Then, going back to a hotter bias resistor like 250 or 270R, you should get something like 24V on the cathodes.

Re: 1 x 12" speaker cab for clean baritone guitar - Thiele?
The choice of the (Thiele TL606) cabs for that bass amp were: 1) high power handling 2) resonably compact and transportable 3) punch, detail, and clarity 4) Geddy Lee, Moving Pictures 1981 Standing in front of that rig and you really feel the sound pressure when the amp is working but it is never mu...

Re: Ordering guitar amp OT
. The AC30 was a big resto, and the transformer made a huge difference. It went from blah to wow and the owner was floored by it. As I recall it was a Mercury, but I'm not certain after so many years. I remember how great it sounded when I got it fired up the first time. Do you happen to recall whi...

FWIW,
Here is a shot of two 1x15 Thiele cabs and a bass amp I built for a friend. Those cabs had incredible punch and clarity.

Ok,thank you very much, Lauri. So it's that simple then. I was pulling my hair out thinking I was doing something wrong.

He who controls the SPICE, controls the universe!
Anyone here really proficient with LTSpice? I have gone down the rabbit hole of modeling and have had good success. It's a great tool for trying ideas before sitting down at the bench. I've incorporated transformers into my designs and have run into something odd with LTSpice. As a preface, models a...

Re: Express Documents
Would any of you have created a drawing of the basic Express front panel layout with legends, in a computer readable format such as something compatible with Adobe Illustrator, or in PDF format? My front panel plan is to have it laser burned on curly maple, including the artwork and portraiture. He...
