Re: Just why IS the Express so gainy?

Marchless SHARED 220k plateR's: terrible way to up the gain imho... Gain Express: See it as souped up Fender Bassman AB165 (same topology in the right/normal channel). Express: 1st two stages are pretty "normal" but the output from the 2nd stage can hit the (lower gain) 3rd stage pretty hard and, th...

Re: celestion break in, or scumback or ???????

Imho: those "newer" 25 Watt GBs aren't like the old ones or SBs... 65 Watters will give you less piercing highs (the Heritages are even somwhat warmer than the old ones), Heritage M20s are even more "creamy" to my ears. The 30 Watt Celestions (Ann. and Heritage) are pretty bright and Alnico Blues or...

Re: when is it cool to have someone sign a piece of gear?

I did have one amp signed by David Hollestelle (Herman Brood), Ellen ten Damme and Robin Berlijn (Ellen ten Damme, Fatal Flowers) (from the Netherlands) for a customer 'cause he did ask for it and I know David very well. Gotto find the online online pic but it's a blue amp, cage-style housing and a ...

Re: Is a Super Reverb OT (MM, with 4,8,16) OK to use in a build?

With stock bf/sf or MM iron the stack-size is the same for the Bassman and SuperReverb OTs but the style of interleaving does differ. A client did use a custom MM OT and choke in his CT-D-clone (besides some other mods) and it did improve the sound largely. The are small differences between a SR OT ...

Re: 270pf vs. 330pf treble cap - which do you prefer and why?

I fully agree with Larry regarding a small thing in the whole chain but...
in general you'll get more hi-mids using a 330p io. a 270p treble-cap.

Just give it a try and use what you like.

Re: HRM, Skyline, bluesmaster for dummies

Thanks for all your replies!

I guess (ha ha) these questions are asked over and over but maybe it's (indeed) a good idea to make a sticky or document about this in the files section.

Seems to be a great forum, again thanks!

HRM, Skyline, bluesmaster for dummies

Hi all

Can anyone explain in a few words (or with some schematics) what the HRM, Skyline and BluesMaster mods are and in which models (70s/80s/90s?) they're used?

Many tia!

Re: EL34, 6L6 and powerrating?

Hi guys, new here and just finished an Express clone. I have EH EL34s in there and I know it also takes 6L6s. But I was wondering which tube is the original tube for an Express? Which one gives it its destintive Trainwreck sound> And also, what the official powerrating of the amp with both types? T...

Re: DC on Presence Pot?

Hi

I really like the range of the "scratchy presence pot" too. You can also use a 4k7 resistor and a 25k lin pot in series with the cap but the "scratchy pot" rules regarding the range imho.

Re: Volume Pot Taper Question

Hi

There are several tapers regarding LOG pots; I've seen 10% and 35% ones. Most modern 1M log pots are 10%.
I suggest trying another (10% log) pot 1st.

Hope this helps,

Chris
