Re: Ethics of Cloning

It is even worse, since requirements are deontic terms. So in this respect consequentialism is an deontic theory requiring that we maximize value. Similarly, Kantian deontology is often based on value, even if the values differ. Thanks, Roe! Seems to me that Kantian deontology is at the root of how...

Re: Poll: Are New Dumbles Considered Clones?

The thrust of the question isn't based upon technical exactness...I think. I'm trying to understand what are the ethical considerations between what Andy did with his 'by Dumble' badged clone/copy/replica and what Drew is doing with his 'by Dumble' badged clone/copy/replica. Is one morally right beh...

Re: Poll: Are New Dumbles Considered Clones?

Thanks, Martin. The dichotomy is intentional. Regardless of any intentionality it is authentically sloppy philosophical framing -- Dolly was an ewe. .. Clever. Are you suggesting that the ethical differences between copying and cloning are so vast that we require a third category to consider the et...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

as consequentialists, we may be required to maximize the value of amps by cloning and building maximally? Right on! Why get hung up on deontology? Let’s blow this thing wide open!! So let’s say the goal for DPS is to produce a small number of clones at a very high price and prevent others from clon...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

As a moderator of my own thread, I’m going to refrain from comments that would steer the discussion toward what would be perceived as my own opinion. I would rather act as someone bounding the discussion to the ethics of cloning. That’s not to say that at some point someone will call me on inserting...

Poll: Are New Dumbles Considered Clones?

In the thread 'Ethics of Cloning' https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39076 I reference a post here: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=327840#p327840 Where Martin Manning provides what I consider to be an excellent definition of a clone: as something that copies the circuit, la...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

Adhering to the definition above of a clone as: ...a clone as something that copies the circuit, layout, and appearance exactly. An extreme example would use identical parts, and might easily be mistaken for an original. Are the amps being offered by Drew considered clones or originals? I have creat...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

I would think, though, that if it becomes widely known that a functional equivalent can be built from off the shelf parts (i.e. there is no magic), then the value of an original is reduced. I believe this is the reason that few owners are willing to let anyone with technical knowledge examine the i...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

Thanks, Martin. I've lifted your post from that thread. Hope you don't mind. I'm with those who define a clone as something that copies the circuit, layout, and appearance exactly. An extreme example would use identical parts, and might easily be mistaken for an original. IMO it is unethical to buil...

Re: Ethics of Cloning

Dan, A wonderful post! You came to the 'intersection' of legal and ethical I alluded to my original post. I suspect, as well, that the small volume of production will be enough to stave off pirates and this was DPS's rationalization. Competing imperatives and lesser of evils! Nice!! Fischerman, You ...

Ethics of Cloning

I happen to find ethics fascinating. I'm also ruthlessly curious--Father Wood's (former Dean of Boston College Evening College) words, not mine. I'm also retired and this post may be driven by boredom. Please forgive me in advance. Now that it seems like one is able to purchase what is arguably noth...

I do this all the time on old Fender amps. I use the reverb footswitch hole. Reversible and non destructive.
