Re: New "Designer" caps discussion.

Totally agree with Fuchs here.... I've been into sourcing components for quite critical applications for decades, and I don't for a second believe all the BS served by boutique vendors. "Rolling your own" capacitors without serious machinery is just nonsense.. the production spread will be far too h...

Re: Schematic Software

The clue with an intergrated Sch-PCB package, is that when the schematic is done and transferred to layout, all connections - aka netlist- follows, When you then start moving components around, all connections are "rubber banded" and shown as you move things around... make a printout, and -voila- yo...

Re: Schematic Software

There's Eagle, KiCad and several minor ones..... commercial versions are from expensive, to very expensive.... Eagle has a fre version and an upgrade paid version....There's also some pcb only prog's, but the basis of a good layout is the schematic with it's netlist and footprint definitions... KiCA...

Re: Varistor or Cap on Power Switch?

Varistors are for over voltage protection... usually from spikes on the network. While it will short to ground if you connect to a too high input voltage, it will also most certainly burn the varistor.... if the circuit breaker pops before something else..... anyones guess is as good as mine...

Re: Oscilloscopes and grounding

Back in the days when TVs had the chassis connected to one phase, it was a common problem for us with IT power networks. With IT there's no neutral.... If you then had a scope with line ground connected to scope chassis...... Boom.... A lot of modern scopes have separate ground and chassis earth, - ...

Re: Good designs for dummy loads?

Take the resistors you need, - usually 10 or 20 ohm ww's will do, and dunk them in a quart paint can with oil... add connectors, switches - whatever..... if you need sustained loading, - use a gallon can.... This has been used for RF for ages....

Re: Antek Toroid PT questions

Over the years, I've used bucket loads of toroids for various purposes, and I always mount them as shown in the pictures above. Using the supplied metal disc and rubber gasket on top, does not create a shorted loop, - only if you for some peculiar reason should use a bracket ( of sorts) to tie the t...
