New build - final decisions

Hi guys....I'm about to make the final decisions on a new build.... It will be a 100W ODS, - and I have most of the parts.. Transformer will be ClassicTone, but I have not decided on a few details that will affect the chassis drawing... Effects loop - In my head a loop should be buffered - or not???...

CAD drawings

Not that I'm particularly lazy, but I'm not much of a dude with Autocad, so was looking around to see if I could find a cad file for the ODS chassis....with no luck..
Are there any CAD chassis files posted, that I'm just unable to find???

Re: Neater Wiring - Cable Lacing

Cable lacing is standard practice in almost any other form of professional electronics. I'm an EE with quite some years of exprience in design and service of various types of SS electronics, from audio to geophysical instrumentation, but I'm just about to start my first tube amp project. Tube amplif...

Re: Multimeter suggestions?

There's no discussion about Fluke, very good - and with a markup for the name - but there's several cheaper instruments that are very good, and in my mind ( and experience, because I've used them) a par with Fluke. Amprobe and Appa are two that springs to mind, if one wants to save a buck or ten...

Re: Odd Switch Question?

A rotary may work, but if you insist on toggles, I am pretty sure you'll never find such switches. Being the old geezer I am, and having fumbled professionally with all sorts of electronics from dirt cheap to extremely expensive, I am pretty certain. Toggles controlling a set of relays can do what y...

Re: Reactive Load Question

Basically, all you need to measure and generate an impedance plot, is a PC with soundcard ( laptop works OK) and free software, REW is one example... and some reading to do, of course, on "how to.."

Re: Matched Tubes?

The biggest change in tubes are during the first 20-30 hrs of service, and if I don't remember totally wrong, the old RCA tube manual recommended 50 hrs of burn-in before attempting any serious matching. Something to think about when buying "matched" sets of tubes....

Re: Parts questions

I may use a small toroid for the 12V's, since I'm concidering going with a solid state reverb circuit.....
12V can also be fixed by a voltage doubler from the 6.3 heater....not much power needed just for the relays... there are also lots of good quality 5V relays...

Parts preferences

Hi again - planning an ODS build, and wondering about your preferences for some parts.. not quite sure yet if 50 or 100W - most likely 100...
I already have most of the smaller parts, but
Pot's - Alpha or CTS - pro's and con's?
Classic Tone transformers - both PT and OT - any thoughts??

Re: Parts questions

Ad relays.. there are number of manufacturers out there... I use Omron quite a lot also in my work.. unless you specifically want relays with built.in LED indicators, the G5 series is quite suitable for the purpose... https://www.elfadistrelec.no/no/signalrele-12-vdc-288-ohm-500-mw-thd-omron-electro...

Re: Relays: Solder or Socket? What's best practice?

If you choose to use sockets- use the best quality socket with turned pins and twisted contact springs. With the "standard" relays used, it is easy to snip a pair of unused pins to make room for securing strips....

Re: Soldering Tips and Technics by Dr Z

A few extra tips.... Keep a wet sponge at the station, and wipe the tip often. A lot of the Wellers and the likes have a sponge holder included. I prefer the wet sponge to the "Steel wool" cleaners one sees nowadays. A tin of Weller tip cleaner also does magic. A quality plated tip should last a LOT...
