Re: Fixed bias EL84 circuit?

Wow! I didnt know they made an EL84 tremolux, way cool! Wonder if they fixed biased the thing.
Im playing very late here right now, master is so damn good on the naylor circuit. Got some delay in the loop, very low volume with some grind, killer tones.
Hope i get it sorted tomorrow.

Re: Fixed bias EL84 circuit?

Im using a 4k3 with this one. Hey Colossal, how long you think EL84's will last running at 377V plate, 355V screen and 22ma bias? I get around 66% so maybe ok? I punished this thing today, man its loud. Just going thru it now attenuating small areas, see if i can bring it down nice. Pulled two tubes...

Re: Fixed bias EL84 circuit?

Thanks Dave! Checked that out, heard a few decent clips. Some not so too.. ;) I modded it to fixed bias, only had a 25k pot on hand but managed to manipulate it to give me between a wide range. Now this is all naylor front end, inc the PI which has same values as that atomic for cathode and plates b...

Fixed bias EL84 circuit?

Just tooling around on a mule with a high gain EL84 thing. Want to try it fixed bias. Any bias circuit values out there for me? I recently finished one of the most amazing amps ive yet built, a Naylor superdrive. Man that thing is wicked. Got me to wondering what the circuit could sound like with EL...

Re: Naylor SD60 style build

I started out with the pre circuit, and loved it, but as we do... i altered it to the post circuit. My issue was i didnt have any great 6L6's or 5881's. I had some in an order i was waiting on, but in the mean time i set it up around JJ KT66's. I ended up with parts of both circuits that sounded abs...

THD Flexi 50 bias setup

Anyone have any goss on the flexi 50's individual bias?
Im keen to try it out. SOme times i really like an amp with say and EL34, but then it sounds killer with a KT66.
I spose its as simple as separate complete bias circuits, interested to know how Andy did it.
Cheers

Re: Naylor SD60 style build

Quiet indeed! Thats one thing i noticed of mine, very friggin quiet, that and the tubes run very cool. Glad to see another SD60 build, i friggin love mine. Been running for a month or so, i went between schemos and tubes tweaking till i was happy, and happy i am! Very interesting amp, some killer to...

Re: Matchless filtering and rectifiers.

I've been inside a Phoenix and a lightning, both newer amps made in the last few years. No styrene at all.
I bought a bunch of trw styrene caps in big coupling values a while back. Was glad to see they use them too. Tho the bigger caps were Mallory branded.

Re: Matchless filtering and rectifiers.

I was a little surprised as ive been in a couple of their amps and they were totally polyester thruout, even pf values.
Seen a few pics of early amps tho, and they look mostly styrene in the early years.

Re: Matchless filtering and rectifiers.

OK, its entirely DC30 preamp, verbatim. Has all styrene caps apart from the tone control .02's, theyre M150's, and the .047 output coupling caps that are also M150's. Change to the dropping string;, 47K to PI, 6K8 to V1, 5K6 to EF86, 6K8 to V2 Filters the same in the preamp as the DC30. Cathodes are...

Re: Matchless filtering and rectifiers.

I am going thru it, its pretty much a phoenix with 2 tubes, but FAR less heat. Its running 390R/100uf each cathode vs 270R/250uf of the phoenix or clubman or chief. Just realised its git dissimilar recs in it. A 5U4GB plus the 5AU4. But from spec looks like the 5AU4 is a little heftier version of th...

Matchless filtering and rectifiers.

Got an odd thing here. I lent a buddy my Express to try out, see if it was his thing. In return he dropped his Matchless HC85 to me for a few weeks. Have a look at it and retube etc. They ony made 25 of these super heavy beasts. 4 x EL34 in cathode bias... yum! I really like this amp, killer tone. S...

Transformers spacing/ orientation and heater CT

Im in the middle of a naylor superdrive build. Im curious about the transformer layout in these amps. They run their trannies in the same direction, no 90 degree axis change. Im wondering how convention has escaped them yet appears they made a pretty good amp, tho a little off the radar. What they d...
