Re: Greetings, thoughts on loud and clean Dumble style amps(SSS)

Several years ago I had the pleasure to try a Steel String Singer side by side with a ODS, and I have to say it´s a totally different animal.Yes, loud and clean but also warm and singing, very unlike Fender clean. You have to experience this to understand why many people want this type of amp.No way ...

Re: BEN HARPER'S DUMBLE ,WHICH MODEL?

Probably similar to #94.This one was made for Carlos Rios, as far as I know.Quite likely some special tweaks. The unique thing about this is it has an Accent switch instead of the Presence control.Other than this I am certain that it has little in common with #40, most likely closer to #124 or #123.

Re: Mid Boost or Deep Switch, That is the Question

I personally am a big fan of the Deep switch, especially when used together with the Bright and Rock/ Jazz switches, but only for clean sounds.IMHO the Mid switch is most useful for fattening single coil sounds, so it really depends on what you want to achieve.BTW I have seen one early 80s ODS that ...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

To put things in perspective: I was answering the questions to keep people from wasting their time by building an amp off of a schematic with a number of mistakes.I´m sure the professional builders all know the details anyway, so there´s no big secret here. The early amps weren´t gooped, plus there´...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

I´m currently using Tone Tubbies, although my amp originally came with an Altec, and yes, I thought the Accent switch was a bit too much in this combination. That was the reason I had the amp modified with a presence control, after seeing photographs of Rick Vito´s amp, again with Mr. Dumble´s help.D...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

OK guys here´s more: The cathode caps are 4,7 µF for all stages, in this case Illinois caps, not Sprague.I had them out of the amp at one time, one cap measured 2,7 µF.The Overdrive Level pot is 100 KL, just the usual stuff.Like many people I wasn´t 100% percent happy with the tone in original condi...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

Ok here we go: First : The tonestack. The Treble pot should be 500KL, you can see in the pictures that it is much larger than the CTS pots. The cap is a 510 pF ,at least it is in my amp.The Middle pot is a 250 KA (10 % taper). The caps wired to the Bass pot should be .002 (top to wiper) and .022 (wip...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

Jelle, I totally agree with you. I´ve owned my silver ODS since 1979, it has a voice all its own.I´ve used it on countless gigs, and I got a lot of compliments for my sound. Especially from the P.A .people and fellow musicians.Keep rockin guys

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

Looks like another interesting transition model.Looks like HAD started with 1 Meg pots for Bass and Treble, then lowering the pot of the Treble pot to 500 K, then 250 K, then also lowering the value for the Bass pot, finally arriving at the 250 K Treble, 100K Mid, 250 K Bass values that I believe ar...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

Another small detail: The reason there is a 1000 pf cap across the Bass pot is to short highs to ground in Jazz mode, in order to make the Bass control work more effectively. If you build an amp without the Rock/Jazz switch you might just as well leave it out IMO.It does, however, affect tone in Rock ...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

I remember one amp that was sort of a transition model, but I don´t remember the serial no.Probably 50 something, made in 1980, with the accent switch ,but no ratio control. It had a 250 KL Treble pot, but still a 1 Meg Bass pot, and also an eq similar to the Skyliner, i.e. 10n cap with 250K Middle ...

Re: What effect does the Jazz switch have on an ODS?

When you use the ODS in Jazz Position try turning up the Bass pot past 2 o´clock. Below this setting most amps sound thin. Turning ther bass up full will yield more bass than the Rock setting, hence the name "Jazz". I guess the original intention was to offer both a Fender style eq(Rock)and a shelvi...
