Re: Does low plate = low gain/distortion on tap?
Weird. It is normal that you have to turn up the OD trim a bit (1.5 - 2 times the setting you like with high plates) when changing to low plates, but there should be plenty of range to get a good OD tone. IIRC it has been reported that HAD adjusted the trim pot in low plate amps to about 50K to grou...

Re: too much low end
Hi Greg, just some thoughts. To some extent, this is just the way it it is, the Skyliner eq has more bass and way more deep mid content than ,say, a Fender style circuit. When I first modded an amp this way, I thought it was way too boomy, but I found that by carefully dialing in you can get balance...

Re: #121 Todd Sharp's Dumble?
#121 is basically a ODS preamp coupled with a SSS-style power section, and some unique features, such as the 4 knob OD section , additional pots for OD entrance trim and h.f. taper(tone control), and a 12 DW 7 tube in the OD circuit. Very versatile amp. There is a section in the Dumble Book about th...

Re: Robben and his Rig
What I find interesting is what Robben says about the differences in tone of his two cabinets. I had the chance to play through a real Dumble cab once(EVs), and found it to be unusually balanced, very tight and even, much like Robben´s description. There are plenty of copies of Dumble cabs out there...

Re: 2nd gen hybrid - very little mid pot range
Hi roger, the reason the mid pot does very little in a 2nd generation Dumble is the .02 cap on the bass pot, if you remove it you´ll have something similar to a 3rd generation amp, different tone though, actually one of my earliest Dumble mods in 1987. These days, my personal amp has something simila...

Re: Advice on best 1x12 speaker
A number of other options: I have used various speakers with good results with my own amp and other ODS style amps: WGS makes a copy of the G 12-65 , AFAIR called ET 65, which I personally preferred over the Celestion in an AB test, a little cleaner, less "british" sounding IMO. Fuchs amps uses the ...

Re: The Definitive Dumble Album
Check out Lindley´s "Win This Record".
AFAIK he used both his ODS amps as well as his SSS on this album.
He never sounded better than on this record IMHO.

Re: Mid Plate iterations and asymmetrical Rp/Rk ratios
I have seen at least one ODS similar to #60, AFAIR 180k/1k and 130k/2,2k on V1a and V1b. From what I have heard this was arrived at by experimentation, in order to satisfy the owners tastes. To me, this underlines what Tony has said in his statement, i.e. straying from the 66:1 ratio may work for a ...

Re: 2nd gen should be something else (sort of a troll)
Skip, here´s my two (Euro) cents: I own a 79 2nd gen ODS, and I was not completely happy with the tone at first, so I started modding the amp (with some help from HAD) in the mid 80s. Without going into the detours and dead ends, the route I took was: First I "upgraded" the amp to 3rd generation spe...

Re: Parallel loop - for ampgarage users only - ENGL-inspired ver
Thanks for the contribution, Claus,
I have been thinking about something similar since reading Merlin´s book.
I will try it out on a C-lator I have ordered, I´ll let you know how it works out.

Re: Alnico Speaker suggestions
I´ve been using a pair of Tone Tubbies for 3 years now with my personal amp (modded 79 ODS), very satisfied with the results. I don´t use a lot of gain, though. A friend of mine has a very nice Two Rock, he has replaced the stock speakers (WGS) in his cab with a pair of Scumback Alnicos, also really...

Re: 123 Schematic
Tony, I don´t really feel qualified to talk about #123, as I have never seen or played the amp. I spoke to about 6 players who did meet #123, they all agreed that it was almost impossible produce distortion when in clean mode, probably the result of the combination of the high plate design, LNFB on ...

Re: 123 Schematic
My 2 (Euro) cents: I cannot comment on the accuracy of the schematic, but I have seen 2 Dumbles of the same era that have the classic tone stack with the 150k slope resistors. BTW I used this variation in a number of my own amp mods, eventually changing the mid cap to .01, I felt the tonestack discu...

Re: Tonestack with Deep Switch, but no Rock/Jazz
My 2 (Euro ) cents: I would definetely recommend using a pot with audio taper for the mid control, 10% or 15% taper preferred. IMHO the usable range of the mid control is between 10k and 50k to ground, with the linear pot it is harder to dial in the sweet spot. Personally, I find all the switches on...

Re: Change in level with the jazz rock switch?
I have a couple hollow body guitars that have floating block construction, depth is 2 3/4 inch on these 16 inchers. One of these have humbuckers with a hardtail and one uses TV Jones with a Bigsby. The Jazz setting requires retweaking of the preamp, slightly increased clean master volume or gain or...
