Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
+1 for Steve and Apex Jr. I guess I got lucky. I use his solid core teflon coated wire all the time and the cheap-ass pair of wire strippers I bought (in conjunction with a whole bunch of other cheap-ass tools), strips teflon like butter. Everything from 18 - 22 guage. Never had the slightest proble...

Re: Another SSS Build
Wired up my first FET circuit!!!! All I had was a MPF102, so have used that to test it until my NTE452's arrive. I think I'll change the capacitors throughout as well. In my Pentode build I used yellow tubulars and the amp sounded a bit dark, so for this amp I used 715/6 orange drops and this amp i...

Re: NW Garage Bands
Pretty cool one from my old neighborhood..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCctP9kStKg Love that. Thanks for sharing. Glad you liked it Lefty! The lead guitarist was a guy named Seab Meador. He was kind of a legend in the Dallas, Ft Worth area in the 60's and 70's. In the 70's he had a great band...

Re: Ampeg V2
Part of the Ampeg mojo is that it has to weigh over 75lbs. It's all about the "girth".Smokebreak wrote:Why a twin PT and not , say, a Super?

Re: Evans amps
Just to follow up for those interested. Looks like the JFET was a 300 volt 2N6449. Looks like these are in fact pretty difficult to source. Apparently, Jim Evans originally designed this as a tube amp and he wound up wiring the JFETs right to the unused tube sockets on the earliest models. Amp also ...

Re: Evans amps
Thanks Rooster. That's kinda the impression I've got as well. I was hoping I could find a part number for those high-voltage FETs, but haven't been able to find even a schematic. I'm still curious, but it's starting to look a no-go.

Evans amps
Anyone here know anything about the old Evans amps? I am aware of the general history of the Evans amp company going back to their starting days in Texarkana, but I don't seem to be able to find any schematics, or any kind of circuit documentation online. I'm curious because there is one for sale on...

Re: AC30 plate resistors -- CC, CF, MF ?
I have a Weber AC30TB chassis that I put a Rocket(TB) channel, a Normal channel and an EF86 channel in. (The EF86 channel and the Normal channel are connected to the same side of the PI as the TB channel with a center position on the toggle to disconnect both channels entirely, BTW, to make it iden...

Re: Ampeg V2
V2's are hard to come. VT40's are much more common. Fliptops sells the transformers - and lots of other parts for Ampegs. It's gonna be a lot cheaper to buy a used one than build one. Great amps. Been gigging with a VT40 for the last 5 years or so. The master volume is a huge help on these guys and...

Re: Do carbon film resistors dry up?
I had an old VT-40 in the 70's. Great sounding amp. Ampeg mounted their preamp tube sockets on the PC board (obvious). I hate that design. With the tubes-down design everything on that board is subjected to way too much heat, and the heat up-cool down cycle plays havoc with everything. Too bad, caus...
