Re: Super Six Reverb

A bandmate of mine had one of these back in the mid 70's. He played a Les Paul Custom black beauty through it and it really sounded pretty amazing. He had no trouble keeping up with a really nice vintage 100 watt Marshall half stack. Yeah, I know, these are from the dark days of Fender. Crappy fake ...

Way to go Tim!
And that's a pretty sweet looking gut shot there.
I can testify first hand, Tim makes a mighty fine amp, steel player or not.

Re: Windows XP loses MS support tomorrow

I've got Win 7 on my laptop and it seems okay. But I aint coughing up $100+ just for ole Bill and his buddies. If it would run my stuff I'd go Linux. Amen Brother! I run Ubuntu (Linux based OS) on one of my desktops at home and love it. Now if somebody in the open-source world would just come up wi...

Re: Windows XP loses MS support tomorrow

Upgrading a system that is so old that it runs XP would be silly, IMHO. You can get new desktop systems for very little money nowadays, and they're much more pleasant to use than old XP boat anchors. Ignore all he whining about Windows 8; if you can deal with going from a car that has the gas fille...

Re: 2nd gen hybrid - very little mid pot range

My 2nd gen build had the same issues. The mid control did very little to nothing. Jelle, I'd love to hear an explanation of exactly why. I changed the slope to 150K, and treble cap to 390p and this helped quite a bit on mine. With the stock 2nd gen tonestack the OD really roared, but the cleans were...

His solo on Aqualung is still one of my all time favourites. Damn near perfect phrasing and tone.

Re: MARTIN BARRE'S ORIGINAL HIWATT

I'd love to hear more about this amp. EL34's?
I wonder if this was one of the old Hylight Hiwatts?

Re: Building a HiFi amp

I've built an Audio Note Kit 4 which is a real nice unit for not much dinero. I've also got an old Dynaco Stereo 70 that I've rebuilt and modded a couple of times. I think both sound great and really were not difficult. You don't really have the same kind of gain issues in these that you have in gui...

Wow Phil, I'm really sorry.
I do know how you feel as I've had to deal with this before.
Sounds like you gave her lots of love and a long happy life.
there's not a whole lot more any of us can ask for.

Re: EF 86 VS 5879

5879 has a different pinout than an EF86 so it's not just a drop in. 5879 apparently needs a larger plate load (470K as opposed to 220K) to approach the same gain level.

Here is an interesting post on the subject:
