Re: Where are folks getting 30% taper pots
Do any of the 30% or J taper pots have a firm rotational resistance? I see them often listed as low torque or guitar pots.

Re: Replacement POT
Check to be sure that an alpha pot bushing is long enough to fit through the chassis and face plate.
My current build is using a trainwreck chassis with an aluminum faceplate and the alphas are not long enough.

Re: OT Protection at Output Question:
With a square-wave-like output the tubes are essentially switching between saturation and cutoff. Without a load rapid switching into cutoff can generate high (kV) flyback spikes on the OT primary due to the energy stored in the (e.g. leakage) inductance. A base load resistor across the output help...

Re: Snubber caps in power supplies
Roe I think that I understand the 100k after the choke so that there is a sufficient load on the choke but what does the .22 capacitor before the choke do? I’ve been contemplating a high wattage amp build for a while and I still undecided on adding the choke input or just using a second power transf...

Re: Snubber caps in power supplies
It is my understanding that the op is not using a full wave bridge in this amp.

Re: 5E3-taming the volume
So, I built my 1st 5E3. I used P-TGP-002 PT and a Hammond 1750-H OT. The 1st filter cap is 33uf, and the power tube cathode resistor is a 10w, along with a 50v power tube bypass cap. The rest of the circuit is standard. Going into a Celestion G12M 65 watt speaker, this thing is too loud with the vo...

Re: Biasing AC-30 amps?
That HT is a bit high for an AC30, I think the older ones ran around 320V. Let's hope you have a good amount of screen current to explain why the bias reading is so high, otherwise I'd be looking to install some sag resistors seeing as it's using a bridge rectifier instead of valve. I often find ma...

Re: Snubber caps in power supplies
Can you tap the screen supply from the stacked cap center point on a fwct supply?
I don’t think that I have ever seen that. I have only seen it on a fwb supply where the transformer ct is used to keep the capacitor center point at 1/2 voltage.

Re: Paralleled 6SL7 Stage Driving TMB - Too Bassy
Are you using 10% audio taper pots?
If you turn the bass and mids all the way down and treble all the way up is it still too much bass?
Could it be treble shy instead bass heavy?

So I guess I’m a redneck hack since I recommended an inexpensive but serviceable meter.
I guess only the cool kids own Flukes.

Re: Stromberg Carlson Signet 70 conversion into a Bass Amp
I agree with sluckey on leaving the power supply and power amp alone. You will have to deal with some really high voltages if you ditch the tube rectifier setup. Pick either preamp and apply it as shown above. You might have a little too much gain but once you get it running it will be easy to lower...
