Re: V1 Microphonic.

Hi people. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, but unfortunately work gets in the way of my 'habit' somewhat! I've checked all the turrets and all are tight to the board, so I can tick that box. I don't know which frequencies are more susceptible to inducing microphonics, but I know if I t...

Re: V1 Microphonic.

Thanks for all the input people, it's much appreciated. The volume pot to V1 is shielded cable, and I've tried a 15k snubber resistor on pin 7 which made no difference. The tubes I've substituted are all new and know good as I've tried them in other amps. I've tried 3 Tung Sol reissues, 4 Svetlana, ...

Re: V1 Microphonic.

Tried replacing the 500pF cap and it made no difference. Still open to suggestions.

V1 Microphonic.

After much success and huge rants about the first Express inspired amp I built for a good friend, I decided to build one for myself. My first build worked perfectly from day one, but mine...well, it's a better microphone than a Shure SM58! I've traced the problem to V1, so I used a variety of differ...

Re: ab763

Can't see a problem with using 500V caps. I used 450V caps when I built my Black Face Twin and I haven't had a problem.

Re: Soldering - Precison Electronic Corporation (PEC) Pots

I have soldered stainless using 'stainless solder', but it's not recommended for electronics work...may have high resistance, but being that I was using it to solder motors into slot cars, it worked fine. The last amp I built was an Express based amp I built for a good friend, who, just to be a PIA ...

Re: stupid question about pots (n00b alarm)

I've used Alpha, Mojo CTS and PEC. Don't like the feel of the PEC, or the fact that the shafts are too long and I have to shorten them with my Dremel. Mojo CTS are good, but I prefer the Alpha to them all. The taper on the Mojo Audio pots is slightly slower than the Alpha, but the feel is the same. ...

I don't like buying Chinese either, but although the Chinese build cheap, they still build to a standard. The higher the standard, the higher the price. Their labour may be cheap, but they are shrewd businessmen.

Re: if you had to pick....

There is but only one transformer manufacturer for Marshall and that IS Brian Wallace! Buy Marstran and never look back. I have his iron in a JCM800 (2204), JTM45 and an Express copy.

Re: Express inspired amp completed!

I saw the plates that rj sells and thought about them, but my friend originally wanted a Comet until I told him that I could build an Express. When he heard that he got very exited about the idea but didn't want an Express cabinet. The amp is being built into an early Marshall style of cab and he wa...

Re: Express inspired amp completed!

How does it sound? Truly amazing! The only amp I can compare it to in the way it responds to playing and guitar settings is Glenn's clip on you tube, and it does all of that properly. Playing through a quad box loaded with Weber 1225s with pre-Rola doping, it absolutely sings. Plenty of bottom end w...

Express inspired amp completed!

Gurus, it's done! I've completed my first, and by no means my last express inspired amp. This one is build for a good friend of mine, and I liked it so much that I'm now doing one for myself. I'm guessing I was lucky as from the first time I powered it up without the lamp limiter, the voltages were ...

Try this place:
http://www.dougstubes.com/
Doug is very good with both price and service. I have no hesitation in buying from him, and I live in Australia!
Have a read in his 'services' section to see what he does with tubes prior to selling.
