Re: Mike Landau new dumble???
WTF! I know, right? So....all of that weirdness aside, I think Mike gets extra Cool Points for getting the silver-face with the suede covering. Those are (to me!) the coolest looking Dumbles. Anyone have a clear shot of it? Always neat to see a newborn Dumble. This reminds me of something I've been...

Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?
Anyone have any pics/info/specs? I'm referring to the one used on the 'Tones' album, specifically the tunes 'Zap' and the solo in 'Soulful Terrain' (KILLER tone on that solo). I know a bit about his SSS (I played though it years ago), but I've never even seen one pic in a magazine/otherwise of his O...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???
And in talking to Landau about his ODS, he is very happy! Hi les_guitar, this may well be the case, but as nix just explained he shouldn't be. Who the f.... is Michael Landau that he thinks he knows best what kind of amp is the best tool for him and his music and even without first asking us here? ...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???
Andy, exactly. Oh, and: 3/ -ALL people like to own things that only rich people can own. -When told they can't buy something, a rich person's response is invariably,"Everything has its' price." -Rich people DO NOT like being told they can't have something. This concept is foreign to them. -Demand/pr...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???
A couple of observations: 1/ Dumble is a nice guy. Like lots of nice guys who see themselves as artists, he is very possessive of his circuit ideas. The problem is, he chose the wrong idiom to be possessive in. Tube amps. Tube amps have been around a LONG time. In the tube amp business, it is widely...

Re: Lower Filtering
Actually, four EL34's. I like those a bit more than 6L6's in these amps. The funny thing is, I built one that ended up very similar to #183 after some extensive tweaking, before any of those specs were known to the rest of us. I flipped when I saw (Tony's layout) over how similar it is.

Re: Lower Filtering
That's interesting. I was surprised in my experiments wih lower filtering. I do prefer lower filters on plexis (16 on the pre, etc.), but i figured the Dumble thing would dissipate without the bigger caps. I have built a couple for myself and always ended up preferring the lower values. It's weird: ...

Lower Filtering
Anyone else play around with dropping the filtering below what is generally considered canon? I've found I tend to prefer a pair of 100uf caps in the power supply over the stiffer sounding 220uf, 300uf, 330uf, etc. Am I alone in this? Is this cause for having my Dumble-license revoked? I'm genuinely...

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
I quite understand the semantics of 'difference' and 'preference'. Different isn't necessarily better or worse, just not the same. Hi nix, You wrote: It's been my observation that some Dumbles of the same circuit-style/generation perform considerably better for certain sounds than others. The only ...

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
I tend to believe his more outstanding amps were happy accidents . Hi nix, another obvious possibility would of course be that the Dumble amps, which you personally did not like that much, did exactly what the customers who ordered these amps have been asking for, but that these customers had a dif...

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
Because he IMO knows how to get every tone he wants, IMO he has the freedom to use very different kind of parts to build even very similar sounding amps. IMO he just takes what is available of all the parts which he knows to be suitable in principal for the kind of amp he wants to build at a given ...

Re: Dumble video/sound clip reference, real Dumbles only please
Eric Johnson's Steel String Singer all the way through this tune, mostly with a Tube Screamer into a Fuzz Face, with the Fuzz only occasionally being turned off during the bridge: Great, great sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4n8Feq_zbw . you sure??? looks like 2 marshalls thru separate cabs,...

Re: Answer to amp in Beat It solo
Asian beauty was a variplex??? AWESOME, use a hot plate? Thank you GREAT playing and sound! jim Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy that. The studio recording of Asian Beauty is a Variplex. Live, I used the variac to turn the volume down a bit, with no Hot Plate. I do use a Hot Plate with the 100w plexi liv...

Re: Answer to amp in Beat It solo
Nix, LOVE your sound, is that a CAE OD-100?? Just great! jim Thanks, Jim! I'm not sure what you listened to, but more than likely it was a Blankenship Variplex 50w. Either that or my '68 plexi 100w. The Variplex is a clone of a nice '68 50w, so I've used them intermittently. Both are 'stock' with n...
