Re: OT A/B test

imho once the drummer, bass, and keys come in, does it matter? If one has to struggle to hear a difference in an intimate setting then I would go with the less expensive one. In my experience, quite the opposite is true. When placed in a mix (stage or studio), the subtleties are considerably more e...

Re: Eric Johnson's ODS prototype

So it appears EJ is running this ODS clean with the Tube Driver for his Dirty Rythm tone (like he did for ACL with the SSS in 84', & 88' ). The Tube Driver is used with the Echoplex below it, into the Marshal on top of the stack for his lead sound (as it has always been). The Dumble gets fed by a F...

Re: Gibson Factory Raided at Gun point

Before the Obama-phobes start getting too silly, just know that Henry (current owner of Gibson) is famously one of the biggest dirt-bags in the MI industry. Everyone I know that has come into contact with him (and or worked with/for him) hasn't been the least bit surprised by his recent run-ins with...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

By 1985 Johnson was working on an album for Warner’s Reprise label, with producer David Tickel. Hi Tony, Thanks for the info. If the "Dumble ODS tracks" on "Tones" have been recorded in 1985 IMO it is most probable that at this point in time his ODS with this "low Q parts" still was in its original...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

The Electromagnets amp was mostly the '69 Super Bass. I know he occasionally used an original Boogie, but the Marshall was used most often.

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

This "VERY early" ODS, would it be an actual prototype, ie made before #001, or is it a low number production model, eg 004, for example? Hi David, maybe you did misunderstand something in Tony's post. "Very early" is not his ODS but his Odyssey: "The Odyssey was a 100w power amp and Ej had a very ...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

Do you know what speakers Kyle Brock used in the 2x12's? It seems like they were EV's, but I may be wrong. Not much is really known about Erics ODS..Rumor has it there is a kind of love hate relationship with the amp (prefers it with humbuckers) but prefers the strats run through his Marshall w/FF ...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

Hi nix, In 1983 it is IMO not that probable that is has been an EL34 amp - but not impossible. In the 4th generation "classic" data sheet you find EL34 power tubes as an option. But AFAIK at least by far most of the "classic" amps have originally been built with a 6L6 power amp. Are there any photo...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???

Alexander (Howard at the time) explained this when he offered to build me an amp, that had I not been recommended to him by someone he respected, he would have required an audition recording. This he said, was his standard practice at the time (which was around'88-'89). I heard these words come out...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???

Having a Dumble built for you required a number of things, including being able to play in a manner that entertains the builder . Hi Nix, just to avoid further misunderstandigs: What is your source for the info marked red by me? I ask because I never did hear of an info like this up to now? Cheers,...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

I know for a fact that he also owned a Dumble 2X12 cab. As did his bassist, Kyle Brock when I played with them in the late eighties. Kyle's 2x12's (he had a pair used with an old Hiwatt head)) were in the same orange suede covering with oxblood grill-cloth you see on Christopher Cross' old amps. I ...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?

Thanks for that bit of info, Greg. Do you know whether it would have been EL-34 or 6L6 based? Are there any photos of this amp? Also, he would have to have taken delivery sometime around '83-ish, as he had his SSS in time for the '84 ACL appearance. This would have made the circuit rather different ...

Re: Mike Landau new dumble???

I was actually talking about what interested me for my own usage and/or taste . Hi nix, please let me explain the reason for my sarcastic comment: You did write: Having heard Landau's Overdrive Special and his Slidewinder, I personally find the latter far more intriguing This statement is IMO an ob...
