Try a 12AU7 in V1 and work your way up to the 12AX7 (a 12AT7 in V1 doesn't sound very good). This is a very quick way to see how you like lower pre-amp gain in a 1987 based circuit.

Very nice work.I see you are using a MAP gas torch. I have tried this before but the aluminum sheet tended to melt just as the alumi-weld rods melted. May have been the nozzle I used (broad flame. What type of nozzle is that, a pinpoint flame? And what alloy is the aluminum sheet made of? Thank you...

Having built a 5F6-A and simply replacing the 12AY7 with a 12AX7, I found the difference to be huge. I eventually morphed the 5F6-A into a JTM-45, then a 1987X. Also changed power tubes, negative feedback and output transformer along the way.

See the 470K resistor after the 100K reverb potentiometer in the linked schematic (bottom center) ? P1eXtreme ran a 6V6 at around 370 Volts on the plates with a 600 Ohm cathode resistor. Might try raising the cathode resistor to 600 Ohms.

Trim pots? Go for it man. Once you've found your bias settings you can either leave them in, or replace them with suitable resistors. Once it is buttoned up who cares?

I have used blind rabbet joints on numerous head cabs and several speaker cabs without issue. Fairly easy to make with a router table or table saw.
