Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
No official cab yet but I like the Alnico speaker with this amp. I've taken three different amps to low volume rehearsals for the past three weeks. A Spitfire, a 2XEL84 Stangray hybrid, and last night, the Champ. The Champ is the best so far, in terms of sitting in the mix. I always leave the tranny...

Re: Stang Ray question
Here's a merge of an AC15 with the Stangray. So... 2XEL84 with an EF86 pre and an EZ81 rectifier. May need a little tone tweaking down the road but works well overall for now.

Re: protect yourself!
I've seen a few QUANTUM CRYSTAL RADIO UFO AMULETS FOR ALIEN PROTECTION cycle through ebay that were REALLY expensive. All the components were "gooped" so you couldn't read the values.

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
I built my premium champ kit this weekend. It fired up without a hitch. I stuck it in a cab with a Celestion Blue. Nice little amp, as is. Thanks RJ and the rest for this inclusive project.

Re: Speaker for Rocket
I've landed on a Vin30 in an open back combo. Haven't tried 2X12 yet. I also tried a Gold and a Blue and a G1265. The Vin30 is clearly my favorite.

Re: Source For Nice Looking Nuts & Bolts? 4-40 etc
McMaster Carr and True Value Hardware parts drawers for me. M-C seems to have really high quality parts and turn-around is quick. Their online catalog is easy to use.

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
Can you give us a general comparison of the "upgraded" and "super". What does the "super" offer tonally that the "upgraded" won't have? I have a use for a small amp with rich beautiful cleanish tone, so would want to go in that direction. I don't need volume as much as tone. (Seems like, with all th...

Re: Stang Ray question
The section I don't understand on the layout is where the wire from the Volume pot wiper leads down to the two jacks, back up on to the board, through R11, then C9 and on to pin 2 of V2. There's no R11 on the schematic and the wiper goes directly to pin 2 of V2 after passing through C9 (.01uf). I do...

Re: Stang Ray question
The Stang Ray and my AC15 are very similar so I'll be converting the AC15 to a 2XEL84 Stang Ray while I wait for iron to arrive for other projects.
It was mentioned that the schematic and layout posted at the beginning of this thread are wrong. Are corrections available?

Re: 2xel84 rocket
RJ... Where did you put the OT? Traditional Rocket layout? Must be narrow transformers. The Edcor footprints I'm getting are 3X3 (OT) and 3.25X3.5 (PT), so there really isn't room. I do have a wider chassis (8.5") but I want to use stuff that's been lying around for too long, and this 6.5" chassis i...

Re: 2xel84 rocket
I decided to start this 2XEL84 Rocket from scratch instead of reworking the AC15 I have. I have some Edcor iron ordered, which will be about a month out. I'm going to try to squeeze everything into this narrower (6 1/2 inch wide) chassis. Anyone see any problems with a narrower chassis, noise etc.? ...

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
Did we decide that this rig will need a 12" speaker to sound good? Or is there a 10" that someone would recommend that might do the trick. It would be nice to have a compact, great sounding little combo to pack around for quieter settings. Does anyone have experience with the 10" Greenback or any of...
